In 1920, her parents, Ida Mae Jeter, and John Henry Armstrong, rented a house in Straughn's School House, Alabama. He farmed to care for Ida, and her sister. [2]
I am unable to find marriage information and have used estimated information. Marriage dates estimated. Their son, Charles Ray Downs, was born in February of 1934, so I estimated the marriage to be sometime in 1933 when Ida Pearl was 18. His wife remarried in 1938, so I estimate their marriage to have ended sometime before 1937. Since they are both born in Alabama, and their child is buried in Alabama, I believe they married in Alabama.
In 1940, she lived in a rented house on Government Street in Pensacola with Orville, and newborn son, David Roland. Orville worked as a meat packer [5] According to that same census, he previously lived in Houston, Texas around 1935. However, on his 1940 draft card, he says he is working for Transportation Inc, which was a general commodities trucking company. So he was probably driving a truck for the meat processing plant he worked for.
In 1942, she lost his brother. They received word that Tramble had died in the war after being missing in action. [6][7][8]
She appears as Hattie, with her husband son, David Roland, on the 1945 census. They live own a house on 1715 N. S Street that Orville built himself. Orville works as a laborer, and still residing in Pensacola, FL. [9]
In 1946, her brother In 1946, lived near her on 1701 N. S Street in Pensacola, Florida. Ida Pearl lived on 1717 N. S Street. [10]
In 1956 and 1957, Orville supports the family using his well-honed carpentry skills as a cabinet maker. Carpenter in Pensacola, FL[11]
They later divorced in September of 1958[12] in Escambia County.
After their divorce, Ida Pearl remained in her home on S Street in Pensacola, Florida. In 1952, she worked as a helper in the Brownsville school.[13]
In 1955, she worked as a maid for Escambia county [14]
In 1960, she supported her children working as a saleswoman for the Florida Cooperative for the Blind.[15]
Marriage to Morgan Smith "Smitty"
On October 29 ,1977, she married Morgan Smith.[16] Her marriage records her name as Ida Pearl Fabel, maiden name Armstrong. However, I cannot find a record where she was married to a person named Fabel. While they were married, Smitty didn't live with Ida Pearl but lived in one of the rental homes she managed[17].
Their marriage ended when Smitty died on 16 Jul 1988. [18]
Personal Life
She valued family and was considered a strong Christian[1]. She bred Pekingese puppies and managed several rental homes on S Street in Pensacola. [17]
Death and Burial
She passed away on August 25, 2003 and is buried in Bayview Memorial Park cemetery in Pensacola, Florida. [1] due to complications with Alzheimers [17]
Research Notes
Some census reports her birth in Alabama.[2] Some report her being born in Florida.[3][5][9] However, on her son's Alabama Death Index information, she reports her birthplace as Covington County, Alabama.[19]The first census after her birth occurs in Alabama, so I am inclined to believe she was born there.
