Dated, June 1, 1741. Witnesses: Thomas Graves, Jr., John Graves. July 7, 1741, Recd.

From John Scott Davenport: As a descendant of two Colonial Virginia Arnold lines, namely Anthony Arnold who was hung in 1676 by Governor Berkeley for his leadership role in Bacon's Rebellion, and Francis Arnold, an immigrant from England before 1704, who married Rachel Arnold, daughter of Benjamin the Indiana Trader and granddaughter of Anthony the Hung (as differentiated from Anthony the Planter, his son--no Sr. or Jr. used in records). My ancestor William Davenport married Ann, daughter of Francis Arnold, Sr., and Rachel Arnold Arnold. Our Davenport family history since 1696 is Arnold-related, associated, intermarried, neighbored, joint ventured, and, in at least once instance, common flight to avoid prosecution for embezzlement and land fraud.

The Davenports and Arnolds made common cause in settlement in King William, Spotsylvania, Caroline, Louisa, Goochland, Cumberland, and Halifax counties in Virginia; Randolph County, North Carolina; Laurens, Abbeville, and Greeneville districts, South Carolina; and Shelby and Boone counties, Indiana--and doubtless many others in Georgia and westward. Would be interested in exchanging data with any who have substantive data concerning Anthony the Hung, his sons: Benjamin the Indian Trader, Anthony the Planter, and Edward?, William? Francis Arnold, Sr., wives (1)Frances [?], (2) Rachel Arnold. There are more Benjamin Arnolds and William Arnolds in Colonial Caroline, Spotsylvania, and Louisa records than there appear to have been sires.

3 Jun 1755 - Joel PARRISH appointed overseer of the road from E.N.E. bridge to ye county line, his gang Vis. his own; Jno. Woolfolk; Thos. Hill; Wm. DAVENPORT; Fra. ARNOLD; Mr. Temple's qtr.; Geo. Woodroof; Benj. Woodroof; David Woodroof; John Minor; John Waller; John Sutton; John Lewis, ordinary keeper, tithes". [Spotsylvania County Minute Book, 1755-1765, pg. 9]

More Notes

This is Francis Arnold, who married RACHEL Arnold and he appears to still be a resident of Spotsylvania County in 1755 as shown in the above record. All listed are neighbors. I find the families of Woodroof, Davenport, Hill, Lewis and Arnold together from South Carolina to Mississippi. D) Francis Arnold - 1769 witnessed deed with Thomas Davenport Jr. and John Hendrick. Is living in Halifax County but still had dealings with Cumberland County. Halifax County, located in southside Virginia, was created in 1752 from Lunenburg County. At the time of its creation, its territory included what is today Pittsylvania, Patrick and Henry Counties and parts of Franklin and Floyd Counties. Its present-day boundaries were established in 1766 when Pittsylvania County was created from the western portion of the County. In addition to the Virginia Counties of Pittsylvania, Charlotte, Campbell and Mecklenberg, Halifax County is also bordered by the North Carolina Counties of Caswell, Person and Granville.

Arnold-17607 and Arnold-72 appear to represent the same person because: Francis' parents are not known. He is not believed to have been related to Rachel in spite of their surnames.

I notice too that Francis Arnold has a death date of about 1741. I believe the death date or year would be closer to 1755. When we find Road work with his name on it. Here is that order, dated 7 August 1755

One other Thing, I noticed that in the Biography for Francis Arnold was mentioned as having a 1st wife by the name of Frances _ _ _ _ ? Here is a transcribed copy of a land patient for this couple in King William in 1740:
  • 1704 --- KING WILLIAM CO., VA. Record Book 1, page 228. 21 Aug 1704. Francis Arnold and wife Frances acknowledge deed conveying [100 acres of] land to MICHAEL WALDROP.

"Wee the subscribers Francis Arnold to and with the consent of my wife Frances Arnold doe by these presents for wee our heirs - etc. - doe acknowledge our whole right title and interest of a certain parcel of land unto MICHAEL WALDROP or his order. It being the land ye which I formerly bought of the said MICHAEL WALDROP as witness our hands this 21 day of August 1704. (S.S. Francis (FA) Arnold, Frances (X) Arnold. At a court held for King William County on Monday 21st day of August. Frances relinquishes dower." King William Co. Patents Book 10, p. 64. Also in King William County, Virginia Records, 1702-1707, Vol. 1, by Ryland. p. 22. Record Book 1, p. 228. Also in Extracts of King Wm. Co. Records, Bk. XI, found in Va. Hist. Mag., V. 24, 1916, p. 388.)

I'm wondering where the Marriage date was found for Francis Arnold and Rachel Arnold? Could someone please supply the Source for the date 14 December 1727? If this is the correct date then the Birth date for their Daughter Ann has got to be wrong, or she has a different Mother. Birth Date: 22 Dec 1720 • Spotsylvania County, Virginia. Either way something is wrong. So, it would help if someone could please supply sources from a book or document. Thank you. Otherwise some changes need to be made.

It comes from the timeline event for that date of a Deed Petition that places Francis and Rachel together. I believe this is the first mention of them as a couple, but they may well have been married for years prior. It isn't a marriage date.
