James Arnold is an NSSAR Patriot Ancestor. NSSAR Ancestor #: 104695 Rank: Major
When Major James Fielding Arnold was born on April 1, 1754, in Halifax, Virginia, his father, Francis, was 14 and his mother, Candace, was 10. He married Bethany Bailey in 1770. They had six children in 16 years. He died in 1825 in Monroe, Georgia, at the age of 71.
James Arnold served during the American Revolution as a soldier. He received a land grant in 1827.[1]
Research Notes
Dates used in this family make for a tight fit. People are obviously taking Fielding's dates from the DAR/SAR. Dates in charts often have Francis and Candace b. ca. 1740 and 1744 respectively, which would make them too young to be the parents of this Fielding Arnold, though they did have a son, Fielding. He is a newlywed with no children in 1790 in Randolph Co, NC, as is brother, Jeremiah. Was he really old enough for the RW?[2]
His wife, Bethany, dob is given as 1770, but that is the same date used for the marriage. Obviously at least a couple children were b. prior to 1790, but the couple living next to Francis has no children. Since, Jeremiah later marries Bethany's sister, 1770 as a birth year and 1790 as the marriage year seem to make more sense in some ways, but then....he would need an earlier wife for the other children and where are they... perhaps with his parents or her parents?
Need more records to help get the dates correct and show the correct family placement.
