David was the second son of John Arnott and Mary McKinlay.
He learned rugby at Cheltenham College, where he played for the College XV. He later played for Lansdown Football Club in Dublin, becoming Captain in 1875-6. In the same year he played his only match for the Ireland national rugby union team, in Irelands second international match, against England on the 13 December 1875. [1]
