The oral history of Welcome Ashley is quite colorful. Dr. McClure made note of Welcome's jumping ability in his journal[1]. Local resident Acie Carroll also related stories that were told to him as a boy.[2]
Oral History
Welcome was said to have once jumped over a wagon in the Public Square of Leitchfield, Grayson Co., KY, just to demonstrate his ability.
Welcome reportedly made frequent trips down the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers to transport goods to New Orleans, Louisiana. On one trip, Welcome engaged another man in a jumping contest, which he won handily. As the story goes, Welcome's jump so amazed the good people of New Orleans that they paved the footprints where he started and landed. It's a good story.
Birth
Welcome lists his state of birth as Kentucky in 1850, Virginia in 1860, and North Carolina in 1870. It's most likely that he was born in North Carolina (like his father.)
