Orphans' Court Records The administration papers of Isaac Ashton's father, William Ashton, who died in Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania in 1817 show that Joseph K. Ashton was administrator of the estate. The first page appoints Joseph K. Ashton as administrator of William Ashton’s Estate. The page says that William “died without a Will”.

A Petition for guardianship in 1826 lists Isaac as 14 or over; he was also under 21 since he was a minor. He chose Joseph Ashton Sr [vice brother Joseph K. Ashton]

Isaac married Sarah Ann Krewson on 16 Aug 1832 in Philadelphia, and relocated to Belmont Co, OH by 1835. They celebrated 60 years of marriage in 1892. Isaac died several months later, and Sarah died shortly thereafter.

  • There is no Ashton family listed in Oxford Township in 1800. There are, however, Ashton families in Lower Dublin Township, Phil. Co., PA in 1800. Back in 2004 Kelly O’Leary pointed out families headed by a William, an Isaac, and a Thomas in the 1800 census. Kelly’s web citation is:

“Name: Ashton, William Township: Lower Dublin County: Philadelphia State: Pennsylvania Year: 1800 [Microfilm] Roll: M32_42 Page:154 Image:219 Name: Ashton, Isaac Township: Lower Dublin County: Philadelphia State: Pennsylvania Year: 1800 [Microfilm] Roll: M32_42 Page:154 Image:219 Name: Ashton, Thomas Township: Lower Dublin County: Philadelphia State: Pennsylvania Year: 1800 [Microfilm] Roll: M32_42 Page:154 Image:219”.

I like Kelly’s interpretation that our William, Isaac, and Thomas who were born shortly before 1810 were named after this previous generation. There were, however, a whole lot of people with those names in Philadelphia County.
