Biography

William was a Friend (Quaker)

William was the son of William Atkins and Sarah King. He was born at Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire on 26 October 1765.[1][2]

On 29 April 1801 William married Mary Janson (daughter of Edward Janson of Stoke Newington, Middlesex, warehouseman, and Mary) at Peel's Court Quaker Meeting House, London. He is described as a mealman of Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire in the Quaker marriage record.[3][4] They had the following children:

Death

There appears to be no Quaker death record for William.

  • He may well be the William Atkins whose death at Chipping Norton was registered in the first quarter of 1838.[21]
  • His wife's death and burial record suggests he was still alive when she died in 1837: it refers to her as wife of William Atkins, with no indication that he was dead.[22]
  • Edward Milligan's book British Quakers in Commerce and Industry 1775-1920 suggests that he moved to the Uxbridge area in 1838 and was the William Atkins whose death on 10 November 1841 was registered at Hillingdon, Middlesex that year.[23] Familysearch has a record for a William Atkins whose death was registered at Uxbridge in the 4th quarter of 1841.[24]

  • William Atkins, father of the William of this profile, who died, age 85, in 1823[25][26][27]
  • William Atkins junior, apothecary, son of the William of the profile, who died, age 21, on 3 September 1825 and was buried on 10 September that year.[28][29]
