Note

Note: Colleen's exerpts from Millen Atwood journal in her keeping:
The time is November 16, 1840. Millen Atwood is twenty-three years old and the Book of Mormon has just been put in his hands. He had heard the Elders preach and believed the very first sermon he heard. Now he helped the Elders set up appointments and got as many as he could to the meetings. In the meantime, he received much persecution. Still he had not been baptized. Having learned that there was a Prophet, he desired to meet him. Therefore, on April 27, 1841, he left his home in Mansfield, Connecticut and headed for Nauvoo, Illinois. He arrived there on the 20th of May having traveled 1271 miles. On that same day he records:
"[We] stopped in old man Shirwood's house. This day for the first time in my life did my eyes behold a Prophet of God. I watched my body bow before the Lord in thankfulness for the preservation of my life and the sight I beheld. Saturday the 22nd spent in Nauvoo. Beheld the prophet again. Sunday 23rd Joseph Smith came up to see us. This was the first time I ever shook hands with a prophet. He was easy, free, and sociable, with all. He said that he rejoices to see us being Yankees. 'For,' said he, ' I was born in the State of Vermont.'
"Brother Robert Pierce was present and said to Brother Joseph, 'Why don't you hold your head up as I do?'
"Brother Joseph said to him, 'Haven't you passed by a field of wheat when it was ripe and seen some heads stand straight up as your does and others hang down as mine does?'
"'Yes sir,' says Brother Pierce.
"'Well,' says Brother Joseph, 'the full heads lop; the empty or blasted heads with not much in them stand straight up like yours does.'
"Joseph with all present had a good hearty laugh."
On the same day Millen Atwood heard Brother Joseph preach for the first time. To him it was powerful and good.
On the 25th of August, 1841 he says, "I having seen and heard the Prophet preach with many others, I became thoroughly convinced that it was the work of God and it became my duty to obey it." And so he was baptized in the Nauvoo River and confirmed at the water's edge
