Biography

Stephen Atwood's parents are not provide in these sources[1]. His father was Not John Atwood [1]

The earliest record of Stephen was in Plymouth, where he was in charge of a herring weir in 1643 and referred to as Stephen Wood in the records. He settled in Eastham circa 1654, when he received a meadow grant, and was referred to as Atwood in the genealogical records[2] [1]

On November 6, 1644, Stephen Atwood married Abigail Dunham, daughter of John Dunham and his second wife Abigail (Bangs) Barlow[3] [4] [1] [5]. He was noted in the will of John Dunham as my son-in-law Stephen Wood[6] . Their children included:

  1. Abigail, born August 1645, who married Johnathan Pratt[1]
  2. John[7], who died 1648 [2] [1]
  3. Hannah[7], born October 14, 1649, who married Jeremiah Smith[2] [1]
  4. Eldad[2], born July 7, 1651, who married Anna, daughter of Mark Snow Feb 14, 1683[8] [7] [1]
  5. Stephen, born 1655, who married Apphia Bangs[2] [9] [7] [1] (who is called Joseph in some records)
  6. Medad[2], born Jan 16, 1658[10], who married Esther Cole[8] [7] [1]
  7. Daniel[2] [1]

Stephen Atwood Sr, also called Stephen Atwood of Wellfleet, died in February 1693/4.[11] Based on the calendar of the time this is consistent with the latter part of the year[12] [8] [13]

My father has done a Y-DNA test on FamilyTreeDNA and all but 1 of our matches point to Henry Wood/Atwood. That other 1 belongs to a profile with a tree pointing to Stephen Atwood. Though this does not prove they are brothers as Elijah F Atwood suggests in Ye Atte Wode Annals, it does suggest that they were indeed related. I have created a Y-DNA project for the Atwood's of Sanderstead and would encourage everyone to join.

Hi Sean. That's interesting. It looks like the discussion is only open to members, though. Is there any place showing the documentation of the pedigrees for the matches? I co-admin a study and one of the challenges is getting good pedigrees that align to the identified common ancestor. You can tell that two people share a common ancestor, but you still need other documentation to know for sure who that common ancestor is.

Unfortunately yes, you will need a FamilyTreeDNA account to join the project. Good news is they accept uploads from Ancestry's raw data for Autosomal DNA matches (free). The project is still new so I'm still needing more male descendants with a direct Paternal line to take Y-dna tests. Another down side is all the pedigrees have to be entered by each user for their own account. I see Wikitree accepts uploads, as does Geni. I know 23andMe is developing a new tree option but they don't offer the Y-DNA testing. FTDNA just released the Big Y-700 which I would love to save for. I know this project is going to take years but, it is my hope as testing becomes more common and the technology gets better, we will start to be able to directly pinpoint which shared ancestor each participant matches.

I would also like to add that FamilyTreeDNA, MyHeritage, and Geni are all partnered together.

Stephen has no known parents. John was detached since he had no children. Joan Coleson is still attached. I do not believe that Joan had a child Stephen. There are no Stephen Wood's or Atwoods registered in the appropriate timeframe, near the place where Joan may have been having children. Certainly the relationship is not proved. Detaching Joan.

The below comment is about a different John Atwood.

John Atwood & Joan Coleson were parents to Stephen Atwood (see Atwood-10) which I believe has intermingled the two different families. The below genealogy has some good original sources: http://www.gulbangi.com/5families-o/p99.htm

If nobody objects, I'd like to detach Stephen's parents. There is no evidence that John Atwood was Stephen's father, but the Atwood genealogy clearly states that John Atwood (d. 1644, Assistant Governor of Plymouth Colony) had no children. This same statement (that John had no children) appears in his wikipedia profile at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Atwood_%28Assistant_Governor%29
