Daniel Avery, born 14 Nov 1740 at Groton, Connecticut, was the fourth child of Thankful Avery (1718-1814) and Benjamin Avery (1693-1772).

He married 14 Nov 1765 at Groton, Connecticut, Deborah Avery [b. 1 Feb 1742, daughter of Ebenezer and Lucy (Latham) Avery; they were first cousins once removed]. Eight children came from this union:

  1. Daniel Avery (1766-1842), b. 18 Sep 1766; married 1) Lydia Avery; 2) Abigail Smith; 3) Freelove Mitchell
  2. Elias Avery (1768-1837), b. 6 Apr 1768; married Sarah Barber

  4. Isaac Avery (1772-1858), b. 30 Mar 1772; married Sarah Brooks

"Daniel Avery was Ensign under Lieut. Col. William Ledyard when he was killed, gallantly defending Fort Griswold.[1][2] His name is inscribed on the monument at Groton erected to the memory of the brave soldiers who fell September 6, 1781." [3]
