Biography

Jean Babin was born in St. Charles des Mines, Acadie, about 1700, a son of Charles Babin and Madeleine Elizabeth Richard. He married Marguerite Terriot, daughter of Jean Terriot and the late Jeanne Landry, on 14 October 1721 at Saint Charles des Mines.[1][2]

On 5 September 1755, Jean, age 55, was imprisoned along with hundreds of other Acadian men at the St. Charles des Mines church in Grand Pré. On a list of prisoners, he was said to live in the village of Grand LeBlanc with two daughters (spouses were not included on the list), and owned 5 bullocks, 6 cows, 8 young cattle, 33 sheep, 13 hogs, and 5 horses. His property and livestock became forfeit to the crown, and his family was required to prepare for deportation within thirty days.[3][4]

On 27 October 1755 Jean, Marguerite and their children Paul, Simon, Marguerite, and Anne were deported aboard the Sarah and Molly (AKA Sally and Molly) from Grand-Pré to Virginia. Virginia would not accept the prisoners, so after overwintering in port, in May 1756, on the Bobby Goodridge, they were deported again, from Virginia to Portsmouth, England, where they arrived on 23 June 1756. From there they were sent to Southampton, England where they stayed for seven years, until the signing of the Treaty of Paris ended the war.[4]

On 16 May 1763, they were identified on a list and released to the French at Southampton, Hampshire, England. The family appears "On the numbered list of 219 French Neutrals delivered by Edward Noble to Sieur De La Rochette at Southampton, England."[5] Jean was listed on the 1772 census at St-Malo, age 72 years, an invalid.[6]

He died on 17 September 1774 and was buried the next day in Saint-Servan, France.[7]

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jean by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA test-takers in his direct paternal line. Mitochondrial DNA test-takers in the direct maternal line: It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jean:

DOBR has Anne Babin who died at age 2 1/2 months buried in 9.2.1743, dau of Jean baptiste Babin and Marguerite Theriot. She is not listed in Landry nor Reader. She has a sister born October 31, 1745 of same name. Since the first one obviously died young, the next one was named after her. Do you see any reason I should not add her profile?

Thanks, Cindy Bourque Cooper

Answering my own question, she is Marianne Babin per DOBR, and already has a profile.
