Biography

Jesse James Bailey was born in 1881. He was the second child (but oldest surviving child) of Levi Bailey and Mary Lloyd.[1] The 1881 Census shows his age as 1 month.[2] He is recorded at age 10 on the 1891 census.[3]

Jesse's mother had passed away (1890) just days before his ninth birthday, and it is assumed that his 71 year old grandmother Sophronia Peabody who lived with them, took over this role for him and his younger siblings. Then when his father also died when he was 12 (July 1893), Sophronia quickly (on Aug. 4, 1893) arranged for her nephew James A. Peabody to be appointed Tutor for all the children of Levi and Mary (they were all still of minor ages, between 4 and 12 years of age).[4] Now parentless, each of the children was placed with relatives and/or neighbours.

According to the 1901 census, Jesse was a "domestic" at age 20 with the family of Lyman P. Knowlton, also of Potton.[5]

Just days before he turned 23, Jesse, on 17 Feb 1904 in Huntingdon, Quebec, married Elizabeth Harrigan, daughter of John Harrigan of Huntingdon, Quebec.[6] "Lizzy" was born in Huntingdon, QC on 1 Oct. 1876. The couple had 5 children over the next 15 years, all born in Potton. (Perhaps they lived for a short while in South Troy, Vermont, since the Waterloo Advertiser reported 15 Nov 1907 that Jesse was moving from South Troy to Mansonville). Their children were:

  1. Lila May, b. 16 June 1906; d. 31 Dec. 1906
  2. Eva May, b. 15 Jan. 1908; m. Curtis Joseph Sawyer, 21 June 1938; d. 9 May 1999
  3. Jesse James (Jr.), b. 24 May 1912; m. Evelyn Sherrer, 13 Sep. 1935; d. 12 May 1999
  4. George Lloyd, b. 14 July 1914; m. Kathleen Edith Cote, 23 Sept. 1939; d. 3 Nov. 2011, and
  5. John Arthur ("Jack"), b. 31 Mar. 1919; d. 29 March 1943 (Nijermerdum, Netherlands)[7]

This family was living in Potton, Quebec when the 1911[8] and 1921[9] censuses were taken. Jesse was living in Regina, Saskatchewan apart from family, in 1941.

Jesse passed away at age 65 in 1946.[10] His wife outlived him by 34 years, passing away at Waterloo, QC on 21 May 1980, at the wonderful age of 103 years.
