Richard Bailey was born in Bradford (area later, in 1726, to become known as East Bradford, then in 1850 as Groveland) on 30 September 1675,[1] the eldest son and second of Joseph Bailey and Abigail Trumble's eight children. He was baptized in Rowley, Massachusetts 28 November 1675,[2] it being another 7 years before the First Church of Bradford was established.
Richard was a yeoman and lived in the East Parish of Bradford MA where he was a selectman for more than twenty five years and Deacon and Elder in the Church.[3] He was often referred to as "Elder Richard Bailey" or "Deacon Richard Bailey". Some of his children spelled their name "Bayley" and others "Bailey". He signed his own last name as "Baley" on the settlement papers of his father's estate on 9 March 1713.[4][5]
He married Joanna Webster 21 February 1706 in Bradford,[6] and in 1709 Richard and Joanna were admitted to full communion in the First Church, Bradford.[7]
Richard was appointed Deacon at his father's death. In 1718, he was appointed to the office of ruling Elder. When the new East parish was created in Bradford in 1726, Richard was number two on the list of original members of the East Bradford church (7 June 1727), and he was also made Deacon there.[8]
Richard and Joanna had the following children, all born in Bradford:
As described in the following reference,[9] Richard had in 1725, along with his half first cousin and direct East Bradford neighbour Caleb Hopkinson, Jr., purchased a 150 acre tract of land in Haverhill. He divided this land among his three youngest sons, Richard, Ebenezer and Amos, who each built similar houses and settled there, around 1740. This land was then officially inherited by all Elder Richard's children upon his death in 1748, so it was necessary for the other siblings to formalize ownership by Richard Jr. and Ebenezer of their portions. So on 21 Nov. 1748, Richard Jr. and his brother Ebenezer each received a deed to their respective portions of this land, neighbouring on a third section occupied by brother Amos. The above reference includes a complete transcription of the deed to Ebenezer. It is interesting to note that in the above-mentioned Deed, Richard's three oldest children signed their names "Bailey", while the four youngest signed "Bayley".[10]
