Hercilla Smyth Baldridge (I've always wondered if whoever wrote her name in the Bible just couldn't spell 'Ursula') was born in Jefferson County, Mississippi on March 4, 1821, one of twelve children of James Baldridge and Mary (Polly) Stampley. [1] The Baldridges and Stampleys were among the early settlers of southwestern Mississippi and they frequently intermarried with Youngbloods, Curtises, and each other. Hercilla married John M. Simmons in Claiborne County, MS. on October 11, 1848. [2] Almost nothing is known of John, but there were Simmons families among those early settlers so he may have been part of that family. They were parents of six children: Mary Jane (died in infancy), Martha Jane, Lucy, Louisa Ellen (often found as Louellen), John, and Thomas. Father John disappears from records after 1864. Hercilla continued to live in southern Mississippi for most of her life, spending some time in California with her daughters Lucy and Louellen. [3]. She died in Wesson, MS, home of her daughter Martha Jane Youngblood, and is buried in Wesson Cemetery.
