Biography

This profile is part of the Baldwin Name Study.
Buckinghamshire (historic flag)
John (Baldwin) Baldwyn was born in Buckinghamshire, England.

Birth and Parents

John Baldwin, known as John "of the Hayle", the son of Robert Baldwin and Agnes Dolte was born say 1490 at Buckinghamshire, England.[1][2]

In his answer to certain interrogations made in 1549 concerning the chapel of St. Leonards, John Baldwyn stated that he was aged 59 years or thereabouts indicating that he was born in 1490. he is likely the John Baldwin who did fealty for lands in Bellingdon at the court held 22 October 1523. In 1530, John 'Baldwyn of Hale' was fined 2 d for default.[3]

Children of John Baldwin "of The Hayle"

John married; however, his wife's name is not known. They had at least seven children born at Buckinghamshire, England:[4]

  1. George Baldwyn (ca. 1526; d. ), listed as eldest son and heir in the will
  2. Nicholas Baldwin (ca. 1528; d. )
  3. Hugh Baldwin (ca. 1530; d. ); not mentioned, likely predeceased his father
  4. Silvester Baldwin (ca. 1532; d. )
  5. Richard Baldwin (ca. 1534; d. )
  6. Robert Baldwin (ca. 1536; d. )
  7. Thomas Baldwin (ca. 1538; d. )

John and his wife may also have had two daughters:

  1. Margery (Baldwin) Bachyllar (aka Bachelor)
  2. Alys (Baldwin) Gery (aka Geary)

Death and Will

John "of the Hayle" Baldwin died in 1564/5 approximately in his 74th year at Wendover, Buckinghamshire, England.

John Baldwin made his will on 2 March 1564/5, and in it described himself as "of the Hale, in the parish of Wendover, co. Bucks, Yeoman." The will was proved 12 March 1564/5, in the Archdeaconry Court of Bucks, by son George. [2][1]By it he gave to:

  • each of his children's children 4 pence;
  • his son Nicholas, houses and lands in Great Missenden, the Lee, and a tenement in Wendover;
  • his son Sylvester, a grove called Lord's Grove, in Wendover, and lands in Aston Clinton called Pleadells, and the same after his death to go to his son John and his heirs forever;
  • his son Richard, 20 pounds;
  • his son Robert, 10 pounds;
  • his son Thomas, a horse worth 33 shillings, 4 pence;
  • his son George, his heir, all the residue of the estate;
  • Alys Gery, 20 shillings;
  • Margery Bachyllar's children, 20 shillings (which was deleted).

George was the executor, and Sylvester was the overseer of their father's will.

Research Notes

  • John Baldwin's wife evidently died before him, and her name is not known.[2][1]
  • John's children are listed according to likely birth order based on wills with tentative birth years.
  • Charles C. Baldwin considered Hugh Baldwin to be an unlikely son. He was not mentioned in his father's will in 1564/5. Hugh would have died after 1552/3, the date of his uncle Richard's will where the only mention of Hugh is made as the son of Richard's brother, John.
  • Sir John Baldwin, MP Kt was NOT the father of this John Baldwin (see John Baldwin MP Kt for biographical information)
  • Charles Baldwin, states "I think the probability very great that Richard (of Dundridge; d. 1553) and John (of the Hayle; d. 1565) who were living in 1552-3, when Richard died in 1553, leaving a family of seven children, were nephews of Sir John, sons of his brother Richard, who died in 1485 leaving John Baldwin, age 16, his brother, heir.[5]
  • Prior evidence for Robert as the father of John "of the Hale" Baldwin. Joseph Lemuel Chester found a subsidy roll of the reign of King Henry VIII in which he states, "but the date of which is unfortunately gone"...a Robert Baldwin of Aston Clinton, assessed at 13 pounds, from 8 pounds of which he was relieved on account of the marriage of his son, and also a Richard Baldwin of the same place, assessed at 40 shillings. Chester says that if we could but be certain that these two assessments applied to father and son, I think we might be pretty safe in carrying our pedigree a generation farther back. Chester states that this Robert left no will and nothing else could be discovered of him.[6]

Baldwin-3506 and Baldwin-519 appear to represent the same person because: same birth, no conflicting data

PMs Would one of you please add me as co-PM for this profile? It needs a great deal of revisions and updates. I have additional sources and information. Thank you, Carol Baldwin-3428 (I also oversee the Baldwin One Name Study)

Hi Carol — this is done. Thanks!
Baldwin-2116 and Baldwin-519 appear to represent the same person because: Same parents, Baldwin-2116 is unsourced, and date of birth is only estimated. Thanks for reviewing.
