Research Notes:

Note: Genealogical Problems and Research

The New England Ball Project is now the best source for all New England Ball families. Run by John G. Ball, and supported by his associates, it encompasses the classic early 20th century study of New England Ball families: Warren & Ball, Descs. of John Ball of Watertown (1932)[1], as well as the extensive late 20th century research of Dr. Druse, and the latest research available on this interesting family.

Note: A good description of this family is found at The New England Ball Project #185 Mary Ball (1729–1767).

Note: Genealogical Note

Though Warren and Ball, Descs. of John Ball of Watertown[2], says this Mary Ball married Samuel Child, he actually married Mary Ball, the daughter of John and Mary (Benjamin) Ball. Proof is found in John Ball's 1769 will that names his granddaughter Hannah Child.

This Mary Ball married Thomas Wheat 10 Dec 1745 at Concord. Mary (Ball) Wheat died at Hollis, New Hampshire 23 Aug 1767. In the churchyard cemetery, her gravestone inscription reads:

Memento Mori
Here Lies the
Body of Mrs.
Mary Wheat,
Wife of Mr.
Thomas Wheat,
who Departed
this life, August
ye 23 1767, in ye
39th Year of
Her Age.

This Mary Ball, the daughter of Nathaniel and Sarah (Baker) Ball, is the only Mary Ball who would have been the correct age for this gravestone.
