David was baptised in the parish of Wollongong on the 11th of August, 1845.[1] He was the son of Scottish parents, convict John Ballantyne and immigrant Annie Munro.
He passed away at Woodburn on the 5th of August, 1909, due to a heart attack while burning off around his property,[2] and was buried in the Woodburn cemetery the next day.[3][4]
The Late Mr. D. Ballantyne.[5]
The recent gloom on the Mid-Richmond, caused by the sad deaths of so many well known residents, was accentuated on Friday Inst when the news became known that Mr. David Ballantyne, of "The Forest," Buckendoon, had passed suddenly away on the previous afternoon from heart failure. From what can be ascertained, deceased and his brother John were superintending some burning-off operations, and the fire getting the upper hand for a time they had a difficult job in extinguishing some flames that threatened to attack the house. Deceased felt quite exhausted, and after the danger had passed he went inside to rest awhile, but subsequently came out and sat on a log. Inside a few minutes, however, he fell forward, and on his body being picked up the vital spark was found to have fled. The deceased gentleman came to the Richmond very many years ago with his parents from the South Coast, and during his long residence at "The Forest" earned the highest esteem and respect of every person who ever met him, his probity and public spirit being known far and wide. Up till recent years he was always in the forefront of every forward movement, while on the turf he was equally thorough, and it can be truly said of him that he raced more for the honor of the win than the profit. His most notable performer was, perhaps, old Reform, though he was interested in many another speedy animal. In the old days he took a deep interest in the now defunct Woodburn Jockey Club, and was one of its most prominent supporters.
Of late years failing health had compelled him to live a somewhat retired life, while the recent death of his brother James (to whom he was deeply attached) was a blow from which he never fully recovered. The district can ill afford to lose men of the stamp of David Ballantyne, and in their bereavement his relatives have tho sincerest sympathy of a large circle of friends all over the river. The late Mr. Ballantyne never married. The funeral took place in the Presbyterian portion of the Woodburn Cemetery on Friday afternoon, in the presence of a very large gathering, Rev. J. A. R. Perkins officiating at the graveside.
