Research Notes

Because of the advent of DNA testing, two groups of Ballard descendants claim descent from Thomas Ballard of James City County. From what we know of y-DNA testing, this is not possible; it could be one or the other, but definitely not both. Or neither. All of the genealogies that assert a connection claim descent from William Ballard and Philadelphia. Based on the evidence presented, it is not believed that this William is the son of Thomas Ballard; rather, the records show (and sadly, there are very few) that William Ballard, son of Thomas of James City County, lived and died in that part of Charles City County that was once part of James City County. Therefore, it follows that the listing of children is flawed as well, due to no acceptable documents or sources being presented for this William.

It is not yet documented that their daughter was the Alice who married John Stanley.

From Vince B Ballard to John Ballard: There is no estate listed for William and Philadelphia Ballard at all. This list of children for them was made up by someone. I have never found any thing with this connection listing these children. There were other Ballards listed in Essex county. John, Richard, Ambrose William, and Thomas is what I remember.

This list of children was established after years of research from many genealogists. They are tied together through records in the area where they lived, Quakers records, naming pattern of children, travel records and county boundary records. No, there is not an estate for William and Philadelphia Ballard and given the extensive destruction in that area during Civil War there may never be records found. Sometimes the proof is not in one sheet of paper but in the combination of many little tidbits of paper collected over years of research. I have been researching for 25 years and many of the others who worked on this list were researching longer than I. I am sure that we would welcome you to take any one of the list and work your way through Virginia records and prove without a doubt that they belong to another parent. And wish you the best luck in doing it. We all want to be proven right or corrected in our work. By the way, here is my list of children: Richard b @ 1697, Bland b @1700, Thomas b @ 1702, Philip b@ 1704, Alice b@ 1708, William b 8 Sept 1715, Philadelphia b 1718, and John b 1720. 20 Mar 2000

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with William by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with William:

There is a Phillip Ballard Ballard-143 already in Wikitree. I notice you have Phillip mentioned in your list of children.

Ballard-148 and Ballard-8162 appear to represent the same person because: This appears to be the same person please investigate. Ballard 8162 has no family attached and lists the same death date.

son of Thomas Ballard-171? Duplicate of William Ballard-7973?

I agree with the note that this is likely an incorrect connection (William Ballard son of Colonel Thomas Ballard, Jr.) . According to James Branch Cabell, The Majors and Their Marriages (Richmond: W.C. Hill Printing Co., 1915) and the York Co. Va. Deeds, Orders, Wills Book 15, William Ballard, son of Colonel Thomas Ballard, Jr. would have been born after 1688, and is reported to have died without issue prior to 21 Sep 1719 when his estate was presented in court.

Fifteen years ago I remodeled my attic and turned it into an office/man-cave/hide-away. I painted the drywall a creamy white, but it bugged me. What to do, what to do...? So I took a sharpie and began scrawling out my genealogy. Eventually it spread across all four walls, up the curved ceiling, and back down the stairs.

Every time I get to the top of the stairs I look to my left at William Ballard and good ole' Lea Ludwell and knock their names for luck. There's a note there, too, which still makes me grin: "Ha!," it reads, "I don't think so. Better stop here and save yourself the trouble of painting it over. There's a lot of wishful thinking at work." Now I see that 12 years later the angst is still alive and well. Good. Nothing should be taken for granted.
