Biography

Birth

George was born about 1853 in Minnesota. (1900 Fed. Census)

Family

Little is known of George Baptiste, who probably died relatively young. However, because of information that was gathered in some of the censuses, we can infer something about his family. George's wife's name was Cho-na-ka-we-gah, which is for Conąkewįga, "Blue Back Woman." (Marriage Rec.) This name is found in both the Bear and Wolf Clans. John was also the nephew of Charles Day Walker, who was consequently the brother of Blue Back Woman. (1900 census) John's grandfather, and therefore George's father, is listed as James Baptiste. (1892 census)

Occupation

In "Chicago Notes" (520) he is mentioned in passing in an article about his son John: "[John Baptiste] is a member of the Winnebago tribe, of which his father, George Baptiste, is counselor." It is not clear what is meant by a "counselor."

Death

He passed away before 1890.
