Notes

From a translation of autobiography left by The Rev. Gustaf Olof Barck:

[Details of ancestry are included in family records and notes where possible.].

". . . Took student's examination in Lund, the 4th of October, 1834, and received the honor--adprobatum cum laude.

"Theological examination, Lund, November 22, 1834.

"Examination Latin pro exercitio in Lund, April 13, 1835, with the honor--adprobatum cum laude.

"Debate pro exercitio, presided over by Libration Elias Schutz, in Lund, October 5, 1835.

"Rebuttal perversae neologorum opinionis de peccato originali, hujusque vera enodatis.

"Examination--Latini pro gradu, May 10, 1836, with the honor--adprobatum cum laude.

"Closing examination from Seminary in Lund, June 6, 1836, receiving the honor of praemium.

"Ordained in Wesjo, March 10, 1837, after the foregoing examinations had indicated him to have a well-grounded insight.'.

"Empowered to be Assistant Pastor, in Asa, December 23, 1835, entered thereon May 1, 1837.

"Empowered to be Assistant Pastor, in Mistelås, October 14, 1840, began May 1, 1841.

"Took pastoral examination in Wesjo, October 30, 1847, for which obtained-- cum laude adprobatum.

"Commissioned to be rector in Qvenneberga December 10 1866, entered upon ministry May 1, 1864.

"Issued thesis for pastoral examination, printed, Wesjo, 1847.

"Called to be a member of Kronaberg's province managing party April 15, 1841.

"Whether I have in any way been entitled to such a membership, may be judged by the following:

"On the estate of Frojdansas, there was expended in four years, in and for new buildings, repairs, cultivation, and road building, 1500 kroner. Likewise, at the estate of Mistelås, in 23 years, in and for new buildings, repairs, cultivation, and also establishment of orchards, 6,000 kroner. Likewise, at the estate of Qvenneberga, in 8 years, for new buildings, new arrangement of upstairs of the present manor house, also laying out a larger orchard, 5,500 kroner, not counting the fruitless work of blowing out a well in the rock to the depth of 19 yards, which cost went up to 1,150 kroner.

"Married March 6, 1832, with Ulrika Fredrika Lindquist, a native of Bergqvara of Bergunda parish, born November 14 1797, where the father was "inspector" Anders Lindquist and mother [was] Agneta Wickenberg, cousin on the father's side to Major's wife, Catherina Elizabeth Angerstein of Kostad Glassworks.

"Children: None living in Sweden. Of the sons, Gustaf Wilhelm Theophil and Axel Edwin Theodor, will here only say that they, more than 20 years ago, journeyed to the United States of North America after being duly accredited and provided with passports. The former, a doctor and owning his own pharmacy, and the latter, a teacher of song and music, also conducts considerable business of music and musical instruments. So far as one knows, they honor the Swedish name, have a good livelihood, and enjoy respect. They appear, for the present, not to wish to revisit Sweden. Habeant sibi!.

"The author, as teacher in his own private school, honored by the confidence of parents of many different communities' classes, to teach their children the most necessary elementary knowledge, may write down pupils as examples. Here named:

"1. S. S. Theological Doctor and Professor, etc., Claes Adoph Hultkranz in Upsala, who, at 14 years of age began on May 1, 1837, to take instruction in my school, and three years thereafter, with great honor, was taken in to Linkopings Gymnasium.

"2. Carl Gustaf Mozart, Assistant Pastor at Wisingso, who at 12 years of age began at the same time as Hultkranz to enjoy my teaching, and four years afterward was taken in at Linkoping's Gymnasium.

"3. Anders Magnus Liden, rector at Kimstad of Linkoping's diocese, who beginning his studies with me at 21 years of age, and afterwards enjoying 16 months instruction, which required no small amount of work including night work, was taken in at Linkoping's Gymnasium in 1836, received the highest certificate in every subject. What a tailor's apprentice!.

"4. Robert Henning Edward Hedenstierna, enrolled by me at 7 years of age, and could at 10 years of age let the incumbent Bishop, Esaias Tegner, Dean C. L. Heulin, and Prof. J. L. Wickelgren, on one and same day, hear one of his age speak Latin with unusual ease.

"That my teaching methods were not just the same as the usual public school, is self-evident. The abovenamed of my students are still alive and can therefore themselves best testify of what I have here said.

"That I and my dear wife have given the grounds for the parish library in Mistelås, also the pulpit, and number of slates for Mistelås church (such things as these ornaments, without painting and gilding, were erected by their skillful master, a poor old man from Prosta-Nobbeled parish) may here be named as a tribute of thankfulness to Mistelås congregation, within which we have spent not a small part of our lifetime.

"Qvenneberga rectory, July 19, 1872. G. O. B.

"Parsonage--Qvenneberga.

"The parsonage is located in Qvenneberga tax district, approximately halfway between Urasa and Skoldstad villages of Qvenneberga parish, a distance of 1/2 mile from the church. Mounds rise up here and there in the fields, meadows, and pastures, so that orderly care of the farm is difficult. The yard and barnyard and orchard are laid out on a small chain of hills, which slope steeply toward north, west, and east. The harvest is 20 barrels, of which 2/3 is oats. The farm winter feeds 2 horses, 20 cattle, and 20 sheep. For the present there is sufficient wood for fuel, but no timber of leaf woods to speak of. There are two cottages and two huts. The dwelling house, erected in 1816, has two stories, with entry, kitchen, and four dwelling rooms on the lower floor, and entry, washroom, and four dwelling rooms in the upper portion, and at present, with the exception of the interior finish of the upper portion, is not so well maintained, especially since the outer foundation covering and roof are in shabby condition.

"Qvenneberga, July 19, 1872. G. O. B.".

  • [Stromstad is in extreme western Sweden, on the Skagerrak, directly north of the northern tip of Denmark. A note from H. A. Barck, probably a guess, puts date of this ancester's entry into Sweden at about 1690.].

Note from Tom Blumer - in 2018 I wrote to a small church in Kvenneberga Parish in Sweden to see what they knew about their head pastor G. O. Barck in 1860. I received several emails and photos of the house where Gustaf Olof Barck lived with his wife Ulrika Fredrika (Lindqvist) Barck, also showing the old churchyard that G. O. Barck restored, with the iron gate with his and his wife's initials, a stone wall, and the grave markers that he made for both of them after his wife died. The death dates for G. O. Barck and his wife are from those grave markers.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Gustaf by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Gustaf:

I think the note number N712 can be removed - it just came with the gedcom import.

Mishelas should be Mistelås.

His parents were Mönsterskrivaren L. Barck and Fru Anna Cathrina Wennberg.
