Biography

He preferred the spelling Bear or Beare for his surname.

In 1900 James Beare was age 18 and resided with his parents Andrew J. and Mandy J. Beare in Wellston, Ward 1, Jackson County, Ohio. [1] James' date of birth can't be established with certainty. The 1900 census lists it as May 1882, and the Ridgewood Cemetery lists it as May 9th, 1882. But the marriage certificate indicates that it would have been May 8th, 1881.

FATALLY INJURED

Sad Accident at Superior No. 8

A most distressing accident occurred at Superior No. 8 mine Wednesday evening, one that is deplored by the company and by many friends of the victims.

A Sentinenl reporter drove out to Superior 8 and learned the following facts from Henry Shires, the Mine Boss at the works:

James Bear, a young man about twenty four years of age and Grant McClung, a brother of the late Adam McClung, were working on the main North Entry of the nime, engaged in shooting sidetrack, when they were crushed down by a fall of slate that is estimated to have weighed four tons. Bear, who was directly under the heavy part of the mass, was instantly killed, his neck being broken and his body crushed. McClung was caught by the thinner edge of the great piece and had his back broken.

Nothing could be done for Bear, but McClung was taken to the Hoy Hospital, where he now is. His condition, naturally, is serious, and it is not expected that he can recover. His back is broken, and he is paralyzed from the hips down. Dr. Hoy operated on the unfortunate man late Wednesday night, removing several vertebrae in the hope of relieving the pressure on the spinal chord, but there is little hope. McClung had a restless night and this morning is no better. Should he live he will never have control of his limbs from the hips down.

James Bear lived in the East Side, on the hill. He leaves a widow and one child.

Grant McClung is married and has a wife and three or four children.

Superior 8 was a gloomy place this morning. The loss of the men is a matter of regret to all who knew them, to the company, and their fellow workmen. Both were great workers, old and experienced miners who stood well with their employers and friends.

Ed Sneed, a fellow miner, was a witness to the sad tragedy. It is said that there was nothing to indicate danger, as the top at the point where the accident occurred was excellent, sound and firm so far as could be observed, and the cause of the fall is a mystery. Every precaution has been taken in this mine for the safety of the men. Mr. Shires says that they have been working nights and Sundays looking after every possible dangerous place, but that this accident occurred where no danger had ever been expected.

The mass of slate which fell was about twenty feet long and from a thickness of twelve inches tapered to a feather edge.

Funeral of Bear from U.B. Church. [3]
