In 1860 Rufus Bare, age 17, was living in Carter County, Kentucky with his parents Rich and Martha Bare. [2]

From his 1861 army enlistment papers we have a physical description of him. Height 5 ft 10 in Complexion: fair Eyes: Grey Hair: light Occupation: laborer

He served in the Union Army during the American Civil War.

Rufus Bear enlisted 14 July 1861 at Muldrough's Hill, Kentucky in Company E, Kentucky 2nd Cavalry Regiment on 09 Sep 1861. Mustered out on 09 Sep 1864. [3]

Rufus Bear (Bare) was a Sgt, Co K, 193rd Ohio Vol Inf. Entered service Jan 25, 1865 at Cincinnati, Ohio and was mustered out with his Co on Aug 4, 1865 at Winchester, VA. [4][5] Serving alongside Rufus in Co K, 193rd Ohio Infantry was his brother Henry J. Bear.

After the Civil War he served in Co F, 36th U.S. Infantry. He enlisted 2 February 1866 and was mustered out May 7, 1867 because of disability.

He married three times. Because all three women were named Mary Ann confusion resulted. 1) Rufus and Mary Ann Cantrell were married 1869 in Grayson, Carter County, Kentucky. This marriage and the date are based on a declaration dated 22 March 1915 included in the Civil War pension for Rufus Bear. The declaration states there was no official or church record for the marriage. For this reason the year is suspect because there is proof of the the birth of a child in 1867 [6] Then there is a marriage certificate record for one of their children Rufus' first marriage was about 1867 to Mary Ann Cantrell. 2) This marriage is not mentoned in Rufus Bear's Civil War Pension application but it is found in Carter County, Kentucky marriage records. Rufus Bare married Mary Ann Griffith on 19 November 1874 in Carter County, Kentucky. There is proof for the marriage to Mary Ann Griffith shown by a death record for their daughter which names her parents. 3) Rufus was married on 16 Jun 1880 in Lawrence County, Ohio Rufus was married to Mrs. Mary E. (Davison) Cramer. The Civil War pension declaration of Rufus names her first husband as George Cramer and states she married Cramer on 18 October 1878 at Coalton, Boyd County, Kentucky.

In 1870 Rufus (age 25) and his first wife Mary Ann Cantrell (age 19) were living in Greenup County, Kentucky where he was working as an Iron Ore Miner. Included in their household were: Josephine Bare, age 1, born KY; Richard F. Bare, age 20 (an Iron Ore Miner and Rufus' brother); and Margaret Castle, age 18 (a domestic servant who would marry Richard F. Bare about 1875). [7]

Even though the marriage record for Rufus and Mrs. Mary Cramer is dated 16 June 1880 she is shown living in his household as his wife on the 1880 census dated 9 June 1880 for Coalton, Boyd County, Kentucky. The household included Rufus, a Coal Miner age 37, his wife Mary Ann age 35 born Ohio and three children all born KY: Laura, age 9; Catherine, age 7; Maude de Mont age 9/12 (born Aug 1879). [8]

Rufus Bare died in 1935 at the U.S. National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Dayton, Ohio. [9] [10] The Register of the National Home shows by occupation he was a peddlar. His next of kin in 1898 were two daughters: Mrs. Kate Bailey, Caperton,WV; Mrs. Annie Gorrell, 112 Elm St., Cincinnati, Ohio.
