Biography

Margaret “Peggy” Barnard’s marriage to Joshua Young was recorded in the marriage records in Rabun County on January 27, 1821 in a ceremony performed by her brother in law, James Dillard, as a Justice of the Peace. She was a twin sister of Sallie Barnard Dillard. Both were born in Pickens County, South Carolina on February 3, 1795. It appears that after their marriage they moved into what would become Yancey County, North Carolina. 1822 was the date of birth of their first child who was born in that county. Joshua Young was a son of Strawbridge Young and Martha Wilson Young. He was born in Buncombe County, North Carolina about 1796 in a part that later became Yancey County. Joshua Young had extensive family connections in Yancey County that was created in 1833 from Buncombe and Burke Counties.

Joshua Young was shown on the 1840 United States census for Yancey County, North Carolina in the age range of 20-29 years with a wife in the same age range with three sons under ten years of age. Peggy Barnard Young was living in Burnsville, Yancey County, North Carolina in 1848 as disclosed in a letter from her sister. The 1850 United States census for Yancey County, North Carolina records Joshua Young age 54, born in North Carolina in 1796, with a wife, Margaret Young, age 53 and children Luke B. Young, age 21, Josiah Young, age 18, Mary Young, age 25, Elender Young, age 19 and Sarah Young, age 15.

Joshua Young, was shown on the 1860 United States census for Madison County, North Carolina with a wife, Margarett, one year older, born 1795, and children, L. B. Young, age 30, Nelly Young, age 26, and Sallie Young, age 24. This family had moved a few miles west into Madison County from Yancey County on several hundred acres that Joshua Young had purchased from Jarvis (Jervis) along what is now called Beech Glen Road. Perry Deane Young, id. affirmatively states that Margaret B. Young was a daughter of Luke Barnard.

Perry Deane Young further states in his undocumented book that Joshua Young died in the Ivy community at the Ivy River near Barnardsville, North Carolina and the Madison County line on July 26, 1865 and that Margaret Barnard Young died in the same place on September 11, 1866. These dates of death are contained only in Perry Deane Young. Their places of burial are unknown.
