Biography

Cross of St George
Bartholomew Barnard was born in England.

He was born in England. His parents are unknown. He has been detached from John Barnard and Mary Woolhouse due to lack of evidence.

He appears to have arrived to the New World in 1636: "Barnard, Bartholomew: Westminster, Middlesex; 1636; York, Boston." [MPCR 1:54; York Hist 1:82; GDMNH 76; Goodwin-Morgan 1:47-54]

Bartholomew, a carpenter, first appeared of record in York, York County, Maine, in 1636 and was probably one of the artisans sent over from England to assist in setting up mills in the town by Sir Ferdinando Gorges, "knight, lord proprietor of the Province of Maine". Prior to their emigration from England, Bartholomew and Alice had had four children, three sons and a daughter. They arrived in York with their two surviving children, Matthew and Ann. Their son, Richard, was born after their arrival in York. Bartholomew was named as one of the aldermen of Agamenticus, as York was called until 1641, in the town's first charter.[1]

Records

In Agamenticus (modern-day York County, Maine, on the York River):

  • Researchers note that Bartholomew Barnard of Boston had first settled near York (now in Maine) circa 1634, and that he sold his lands there to Robert Knight by a deed dated 26 Nov 1646 (see below) (Agamenticus (or York)).This would logically mark the date of Bartholomew’s move to Boston.
  • witness to deeds in 1636 and 1643
  • chosen a deputy to attend court at Saco June 25, 1640.
  • Sold land near Henry Lynn's house 26 Nov. 1646.
  • He and Thomas Joy were contracted to construct the first Town-House in Boston. It was to be "a very substantiall and comely Building...sixty six foot ... on 1 August 1657,
  • Jane, wife of Bartholomew Barnard, was licensed in Boston to keep a house of public entertainment, and to sell coffee and chocolate In 1670/71. Her licensed was renewed every year until 1680. In 1679, however, she was described as a widow.

Marriages

Bartholomew married first to Alice Weeden on 13 Aug 1626 in York, Maine. She died in 1663 and he married, circa 1664, to Jane Laxton, who died in 1698.[2]

Research Notes

There appear to have been at least two Bartholomew Barnards, one immigrating to Massachusetts and one to Connecticut. They were conflated and merged here on Wikitree. Many online trees have made the same error. He is not to be confused with Bartholomew Barnard.

Bartholomew may be the son of the Bartholomew Barnard that was baptised on 27 Dec 1576 at Christ Church Greyfriars, Newgate, London, London, England, son of Robert Barnard.[3] The Bartholomew born 1576 may be the one that died in Jan 1647 and was buried 3 Jan 1647 at St Bride Fleet Street, City of London, London, England.[4] He may also be the Bartholomew Barnard that married on 15 Jan 1620 at Saint Bride Fleet St, London, London, England to Margrett Moulshew.[5]

Some believe that this Bartholomew of Boston had at least two sons, Matthew and Richard, and perhaps other children. At least one researcher states that Richard (who owned land adjacent to Bartholomew’s as of 1668) married Elizabeth Negus in Boston on 2 Mar 1659 and died there in 1706. They estimate his birth as ca. 1634. The wife of a Matthew Barnard of Boston was mentioned as a “cousin” (which could also mean niece or other relation at that time) in the will of Nicholas Davis, of York (now in Maine) on 27 Apr 1667, thus permitting an estimate that Matthew was born before 1647. Researchers report he died on or about 9 May 1679 in Boston. Some researchers equate this Matthew with the Mathew Barnard, son of Bartholomew, baptized on 7 Sep 1628 at the church of St. Margaret's, in Westminster (now a suburb of London), Middlesex County, England. See the Latter Day Saints’ International Genealogical Index, Batch Number: P00160-1 (British Isles) at www.familysearch.org. Some researchers then cite three more baptismal records from St. Margaret’s, for Bartholomew and Ralph Barnett in March 1627, and Anne Barnett on 1 Nov1630, all children of a Bartholomew Barnett, as records for children of Bartholomew Barnard, apparently claiming either a mis-transcription of the original handwritten record (i.e., misreading “Barnard” as “Barnett”) or clerical error in the 1600s.

The statement that he "arrived to the New World in 1636" is inconsistent with his marriage in 1626 "in New England" and the birth of several children in the colonies prior to 1636.

Are there any reliable sources for his children? Also, other sites have two different Bartholomew Barnard's -- one who married Dorothy Dox and Margaret Paule, and a different one who married Alice (some say Weeden) and Jane Laxton (widow). Thoughts?

i've looked closer at the various Dorothy and Alice profiles - is it possible Alice was the second wife? One profile has her born 1614 (d 1633, but another has d 1663, making me think 1633 was a typo - 1614-1663 and Bartholomew's 2nd wife makes sense)
