Biography

1776 Project
Sgt. Brinsley Barnes II served with Chatham County Regiment, North Carolina Militia during the American Revolution.

Birth

Brinsley was born in Chester Pennsylvania in 1747,[citation needed] the son of Brinsley Barnes and Sarah Unknown.[citation needed]

Military Service

Brinsley Barnes, Jun'r was a Revolutionary War soldier. He was listed on the Muster Role of Capt. Joab Brooks Company, Serving with him was his brother John Barns and brother-in-law Samuel Carter.[1][2]

Brinsley was granted 390 acres of land on the east side of the Rocky River (about 30 miles southeast of Chatham) in consideration for his Revolutionary War service.[3]

Migration and residence

Brinsley is indicated on this profile to have moved from North Carolina to Kentucky.

  • A Brinsley Barnes appears in the Kentucky Tax lists 1799-1801 in Fayette on 7 November 1800.[4]
  • A Brinkley Barnes (member note with a correction to Brinsley Barnes) appears in Estill, Kentucky on the 1810 census.[5]
  • The Brinsley in Fayette County appears in Lexington on the 1810 census.[6]
  • The Fayette Brinsley appears again in the 1820 census[7] making it unlikely that he is the subject of this profile if the death date of 1816 is accurate.

Death and burial

Brinsley Junior passed away in 1816 or 1823.[citation needed]

Research Notes

There appear to be three Junior Brinsley Barnes: one remained in North Carolina and two appear in Kentucky, one in Fayette and another in Estill. It would be possible to reconcile them except that they both appear, simultaneously on the 1810 census. This profile shows a death in Estill and this census record shows Brinkley Barnes. After this search no evidence was found that shows that Brinsley Jr. even migrated away from North Carolina. Additional research is warranted. Baty-260 00:33, 25 February 2019 (UTC)

  • The Barnes-Oxford Research Foundation is currently trying to determine how many Brinsley Barnes's descend from Baines, Sr. (1713-1794) [Barnes-145]. It is this Brinsley who remained in North Carolina where he died. See an article by John LaRue regarding the settling of his estate complete with many original Wikes County, NC Court document https://competitivestrategies.us/how-many-brinsleys/). Fifteen may be found in the copyrighted article by Gail Lindeman How Many Brinsley’s? on the Foundation's website. Brinsley II paid a Fayette County, Kentucky Poll tax in 1792 and his son Brisley III aka Brinsley of Rush was born in North Carolina in 1784 lived in Kentucky earlier. A Find A Grave (https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/76827963/brinsley-barnes may be found for Brinsley III. The Barnes-Oxford Genealogy Research Foundation received Brinsley II estate paper from the Estill County Clerk's office. They are on Will Book A, pages 254 and 256. They are in poor condition and once enhance and available on theFoundations website.
    1776 Project
Sgt. Brinsley Barnes II served with NC Artillery 1st Company, North Carolina Line during the American Revolution.

John was born in 1741. His parents were Brinsley Barnes (1713 - 1794). He is the third of seven siblings:

  1. Mary Barnes Carter (1734 - 1823)
  2. James Barnes (1740 - 1832)
  3. John Barnes (1741 - 1822)*
  4. Ann Barnes Hobson (1744 - 1775)
  5. Brinsley Barnes (1745 - 1816)
  6. Lydia Barnes Teague (1750 - 1811)
  7. Jehu Barnes (1753 - 1820)
  • There have been several ill-informed attempts to add Louis "Thomas" Barnes (Barnes-11987) as a child of Deaf John Barnes and Elizabeth Fisher Barnes. Please note the Will which is a part of this profile and the fact the Barnes-11987 died after Deaf John. Deaf John died in 1822; Barnes died in 1855. It is highly unlikely that a child would have been written out of a Will without that fact being mentioned in the Will itself.

John married Ruth Elizabeth Fischer when he was 22 years old in Swedes Church, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on 1 January 1764. They had one known child:

  1. Brinsley Barnes (1766 - 1852)

Timeline

  • John, his brother James and his father Brinsley, signed the Petition protesting taxes to North Carolina Royal Governor Tryon in May of 1768. This was part of what was known as the War of Regulation (1765-1771). The war culminated with the Battle of Alamance, which was considered a prelude to the American Revolution.
  • John Barns was a Revolutionary War soldier. He first enlisted and is found on the Muster Roll of Capt. Joab Brooks Company. Serving with him were his brother Brinsley Barnes, Jun'r and brother-in-law, Samuel Carter.
  • Enlisted in the Continental Army on October 1, 1776, serving in Captain John Kingsbury's artillery unit. Served with Commander-in-Chief General George Washington at Valley Forge and the Battle of Monmouth Courthouse.
  • Migrated to Morgan District, Wilkes County, North Carolina, before 1790. He is found in Wilkes County Censuses for 1790, 1800 and 1820.

Barnes-1140 and Barnes-1169 appear to represent the same person because: same parents and spouse

Hopefully an upgrade to the Big Y-700 test will be added to the two testers above for more

definition of this Barnes line.

The marriage citation listed as source 4 is incorrect once again due to the lack of understanding that there are 14 Brinsley's. This marriage is for Barnes-1230 son of Deaf John Barnes-1169 and Barnes-1203 daughter of Solomon (Barnes-368). John LaRue and I will clean up this serious error when time permits.

Numerous revisions have been made to this profile without an understanding that there are 14 Brinsley Barnes's. One glaring example is that land grants were only awarded to individuals in the Continental Army or those whos swore allegiance and gave material aide which Brinsley-1169 did. This Brinsley (Barnes-12235 was only in the Chatham militia and was not entitled to anything. John LaRue and I will clean up this and other serious errors as time permits.

Quality verifiable sources for this profile remain in the repositories of Estill, Fayette and Madison Counties, Kentucky and are not available online. With the assistance of Warren E. "Mick" Barnes who discovered Brinsley Sr. and who descends through Brinley II has provided abstract of his research of the document in these repositories that will eventually be acquired by the Barnes-Oxford Genealogy Research Foundation as donations and overall priorities permit.

The Sarah Howard profile was created by Janice Hardin (see source at left), Hardin repeated created and modified 200-year-old profiles using only "firsthand knowledge as a source. Following the link to her name reveals an unlist profile controlled by an active Wikitree member who has made contributions on Wikitree this calendar year. Mick Barnes the discover of Brinsley, Sr. in his book states that he believes there was no marriage to Howard. He attributes the error to a book on the Barnes family by Ruth Amy. Unless John LaRue can provide sources, I support merging Howard into Isabella Teague which was a spouse before everyone began playing with it.

Source 4 regarding marriage is incorrectly attributed to this profile. Currently, I am aware of 14 Brinsley Barnes's. See Barnes-Oxford Foundation Website. This marriage cited in # 4 is between Brinsley (Barnes-1230) and Sally "Sarah" daughter of Solomon (Barnes-368). The Barnes-Oxford Foundation recently obtained the estate papers of this Brinsley. They are dated 1823 thru 1825 son Moses was the executor. Due to their very poor condition, they have been sent to a third party for enhancement.

I support this merge of duplicates, Barnes-1140 and Barnes-12235 but recommend that the cleanup be handled differently than is the normal case with the two PM’s closely collaborating and agree on the final profile. Death dates are different. 1816 is the correct date. Recently received documents from the Estill Co. KY Clerk’s office indicate that the estate was not settled until 1823. Spouses are different but Isabella Lucy Teague is the correct one. The spouse profile for Sarah Howard was created by Janice Hardin who also added the personal knowledge comment on that profile, Barnes-1140 and many others. The Hardin account is an unlisted account with a different surname yet controlled by an active WT member with yet a different surname. I hope WT leadership will review why this was not terminated outright as is the normal case. I have complained about this as well as the Terry Fisher Family Tree which created Barnes-1140 and many other serious errors on WT. Greg Shipley used his Google expertise to identify them. I wholeheartedly support the removal of all reference to Ancestry trees on this profile and since you now as a Leader direct it I will do so on all profiles on my Watchlist that were created by the Fisher import.

Jacque,

Before completing the merge, James and his descendants need to be added to theBarnes-1169 profile. I will leave that in your hands since it is your line.

Hugh, regarding dates, another complication to keep in mind when researching Quaker genealogy is that the Society of Friends calendar begins in March. So, for example, a date recorded as 1 mo. 10, 1700 is actually March 10, 1700. But, if you're not getting your information from a primary source, it's not possible to know if the difference in calendars was taken into account. Joann H.

Barnes-5656 and Barnes-1169 do not represent the same person because: Although these two John Barnes were both born in 1741, that is all they share. They died in different years, 1798 and 1822, respectively; they were married to different women; Rebecca Haines and Ruth Fischer; and they lived in different areas of the country, New Jersey and North Carolina. Also, I gather that Barnes-1169 was born a Quaker. Barnes 5656 converted to the Society after his marriage to Rebecca Haines.

Thanks, Joann H.
