Biography

John was born in 1783, Newbury, Vermont, where his grandfather was one of the very first settlers. He was the son of Benjamin Barnett and Mary Miller. John had moved with his parents to Richford, Vermont, as a teenager, then migrated across the border into Lower Canada.

The first evidence of John Barnett north of the border (in Brome County) is in July of 1807 when he signed a petition to Governor Craig (a copy is at the National Archives in Ottawa as well as online)[1]. John's signature is on page 32487 just below that of his father[2]. The essence of this petition is that the settlers are asking relief in the amount and timing of payments of rent for the crown lands they are occupying.

In approximately 1805 or soon thereafter, John married Mary (Polly) Ruiter. John and Polly had the following children:

  1. Hiram, b. 1805; m. Sarah Smith
  2. Catherine, b. 1810
  3. Henry R., b. 1815; m1. Emmeline Dufur; m2, Mary Olmstead
  4. John, b. 1817; d. 1864 unmarried, and
  5. David, b. 1819; m. Aurilla Miller; d. 1885.

John passed away in 1820 at the age of only 37[3]
