Biography

Isaac S. Barnett was born in Pennsylvania, probably in Lancaster County near Youtztown. From the age and death date on his gravestone, his birthdate calculates to December 21, 1816. He may reasonably be identified as the Isaac Barnet who first appears on tax lists there as a freeman about 1840, after the tax lists begin showing land there assessed to the estate of Isaac Barnet, presumably his father.

He married about 1840 to Eliza Bates, daughter of Frederick Bates. About 1849 with his wife and children he removed to Macon Co., Illinois where he is found in the 1850 census with his wife and children, all shown as born in Pennsylvania. Also in his household is Selinda Bates, a younger sister of Isaac's wife Eliza.

In Illinois, the Isaac Barnett family was associated with the "Garver Settlement" founded by John & Jacob Garver of Pennsylvania. In the Garver Settlement, United Brethren services were held in the Garver home in the 1840s and 50s, so perhaps that was the religious affiliation of Isaac and his wife at this time.

By 1860, Isaac's first family has been scattered, with three of his minor daughters shown living in the families of various relatives in or near Macon County, Illinois, while daughter Selinda Barnett Houser, is now married and enumerated with her husband. No listings for Isaac's first wife, Eliza Bates Barnett, or his eldest son from his first marriage, and both likely died before 1860. Eliza almost certainly died before 1857, when census ages indicate that the eldest child born to Isaac's second marriage was born.

The 1860 and 1880 censuses show the family of Isaac & his second wife, Minerva Helms Barnett, living in Gentry County (1860 at Albany, 1880 at Bogle). No record of the second marriage has been found to date, but it likely occurred by 1856 or 1857.

In 1870, Isaac and his second family was living in 1870 in Buchanan County, Missouri, but returned to Gentry by 1880. In the 1880 census, Isaac's father- and mother-in-law are listed along with Isaac's family.

Isaac and Minerva are both buried in the Kerns-Freeman Cemetery in Buchanan County, along with an unmarried daughter.
