Biography

In 1671 Margaret's brother Thomas Barrett, spoke of his sister "Margaret who married to one Symond Huntington who carried her to New England & had several children by her; but we can give no account of her or them, yet think that she & several of her children are living there" [Hale, House 648, citing Joseph James Muskett, Suffolk Manorial Families, 3 vols. (Exeter 1900-1914), 2:153-60]. (This information and much more, including the known Barrett pedigree and a dismissal of the proposed Huntington English pedigree, were published by Jacobus in 1952, the best account available of the immigrant family, lacking only the Norwich parish register entries [Hale, House 647-51].)

Thomas Barrett married Sarah Cock 1 August 1625 in St. John Maddermarket Church, Norwich, Norfolk, England. Sarah was born about 1605, likely in Norwich, County Norfolk, England, daughter of Francis Cock of Norwich, Esq. Thomas and Sarah had several children who all died without issue, except the following: (19: ; 23:12,14; 30:15)[1]

.1 THOMAS about 1627-aft 1671 married Hester, a daughter of John Mann, Esq. . by whom he hath had two children, John & Sarah, both dyed very young. .2 ELIZABETH (BARRETT) RAYLEY about 1630-aft 1655 m. William Rayley abt 1655 .3 ? .?

St. John Maddermarket Church: The handsome flint tower of St John's rises above Maddermarket in the city centre. The best view of it is from the north, where its tower stands over Maddermarket Alley, affording one of the city's most attractive townscapes. The present church was built in the 15th century when Norwich was one of the wealthiest cities of Europe. Squeezed ingeniously into a cramped site, St John's is rather oddly proportioned, being almost as wide as it is long.

His father, Christopher Baret, died in 1649 and left legacies to some of his children per the following sections of his will: (23:9) To my two sonnes Thomas and Christopher, all my right & title in any account or reckoninge between Edmund Doyly Esq., of Shottisham deceased and me. To Catherine my daughter my right & title in the Manor of Pulham wherein Gooch lived, and my other estate which Thomas Preston deceased & others purchased, and the said Thomas occupied as my tenant, and now Isaac Preston his son holds of me in Pulham. To my said daughter Catherine one hundred pounds. To my son Robert Baret one hundred pounds. To Elisabeth my wife the residue of my estate.

Sarah died in 1691 in Norwich, County Norfolk, England.

Thomas Baret entered the family pedigree in the Norfolk Visitation of 1664, at which time he bore the arms already described. In 1671, he made the following statement to Sir Edward Bysshe: Thomas ye sonn of Christoph Baret married Sarah ye daughter of Francis Cock Esq. by whom he hath had severall Children both sonns and daughters: all dyed issueless, Butt Thomas & Elizabeth. Thomas married Hester daughter of John Mann Esq. by whome he hath had two Children, John & Sarah, but both dyed very young. Elizabeth married to William Rayley 2 sonn to John Rayley Esq. by whome she hath now Living foure sonns, John, Thomas, William & Augustine & five daughters, Mary, Sarah, Elizab, Ann x Rebecca.
