William Barry, a son of John Barry (1717-1751) and the former Miss Catherine Porter (1714-1787); was born of Scotch-Irish Presbyterian ancestors from County Donegal, Ireland.

In 1781, William married Miss Jane Hanna, daughter of Capt. James and Jean [née Black] Hanna; with whom he had the following known children: John Henderson (1782-1845) Jane (1783-1857) Catherine Porter (1787-1837) Margaret (1788-1838) Infant Daughter (1790-1790) Infant Daughter (1792-1792) Violet (1792-1851) Elizabeth (1794-1844) James Hanna (1798-1818) William Andrew (1798-1841).

Will of WILLIAM BARRY, Abstract, York County, South Carolina Will Book A: 109-110 Written: 9 October 1802

I WILLIAM BARRY of York District: It is my will that funeral expenses & lawful debts be paid with the price of a Negro named JACK & crop of cotton; I bequeath to my well beloved wife JANE BARRY 2 Negroes named SEASER & SARAH & the use of the plantation as long as single & wagon 2 horses 1 mare & filley & all farming utensils cows & sheep & hogs and all household furniture except so much as may be named to JOHN or JANE BARRY and if she marreys [marries] the one third of all and two thirds to the legatees but the 2 Negroes I make her right & title; I bequeath to my oldest son JOHN HENDERSON BARRY land on a Branch of Wild Catt in the Indian Boundrey [Boundary] which I & my friend JOHN BARRY purchased from SAMUEL CRESWELL. I do obligate sd JOHN BARRY to make a just & lawful title to his cousin JOHN BARRY. I bequeath to JOHN BARRY a Negro boy named JOSEP; I bequeath to my oldest daughter JANE BARRY a Negro girl named DIANAH, horse named BALD; I bequeath to my daughter CATHY PORTER BARRY a Negro girl named ANNEY; I bequeath to my daughter PEGGY one Negro girl named MARY; I bequeath to my daughter VIOLET BARRY a Negro girl named MALINDAH; I bequeath to my daughter ELIZABETH BARRY a Negro girl named LUCY; I bequeath to my son JAMES HANNAH BARRY land lying between me and Col WATSON beginning at a hickry [hickory] & running a straight line to a stone [?] near a Big pine near to the ELKINS field; I bequeath to my son WILLIAM ANDREW BARRY a Negro boy named ANTONEY & also the tract I now live on; if any of the legatees should die the Negroes willed to them should be equally divided amongst the legatees, and if any of the Negroes should die the other of the legatees should pay that legatee to the amount of so Negro if died before the legatees of age if the above named SARAH has now more children to give to the legatee in lieu of deceased [Negro].
