Biography

Benjamin Bartlett, the son of Benjamin Bartlett and Sarah Brewster, was a descendant of Mayflower Pilgrims Elder William Brewster^[1] and Richard Warren. He was born, probably in Duxbury, about 1658 ^[1], and, in December 1676 (or 1678) (or November 1678) in Duxbury, married Ruth Pabodie, ^[1][2] granddaughter of Pilgrim John Alden. Benjamin died between 1717 (date of his will) and 1724 (date of the inventory). ^[3]

Benjamin's will was dated 10 Dec 1717. He gave his wife Ruth all his real estate while she was alive. She was to pay his three youngest daughters £30 at their marriages, the same amount he gave to the previously married daughters. When Ruth died the estate was to be divided equally between his daughters: Sarah Bradford, Rebeckah Bradford, Ruth Murdoch, Mercy Turner, Priscilla, Deborah and Abigail, and granddaughter Ruth Bartlett, daughter of his son William, deceased, as long as she doesn't sue for the farm at Duxbury "I now live upon". If she sues for said farm, she was to receive one shilling. Ruth, his wife, was named executrix. The will was proved 6 July 1724. His inventory was taken 15 April 1724 and wife Ruth swore to its correctness 25 April 1724.^[4][5] [Plymouth co. PR #1238, 4:440-41; MD 18:177-79]

Further land transactions name the daughters and their husbands: Israel Bradford and Sarah; Rebecca Bradford, widow of John Bradford; John Murdoch junior and Ruth his wife; John Turner and Mercy, his wife , John Samson and Priscilla his wife, and Abigail and Gamaliel Bradford; and Josiah Thomas and Deborah his wife of Marshfield.^[4] [Plymouth Col LR 18:225, 22:154-55, MD 18:179-80, LR 34:31, MD 18:181-2, LR 41:13-14; MD 18:182-183.]

Benjamin and Ruth Bartlett had nine children, who were all probably born at Duxbury. Duxbury Vital Records state children of Benjamin Bartlett and Ruth Pabodie to be: ^[3]

2 Sarah Bartlett b about 1681 d 3 April 1761, 80th yr, Kingston g.s. <MD 7:23>. Married Israel Bradford.

3 Rebecca Bartlett b about 1683; d after 1756. Married John Bradford.

4 Ruth Bartlett b before 1694; d after 10 Sept. 1756. Married John Murdock.

5 Mercy Bartlett b about 1694; d 6 Oct 1757, 63rd yr, Scituate g.s. Married John Turner. ^[7]

6 William Bartlett b before 12 Jan 1695/6 ; d between 5 July 1716 (marriage) <MD 14:38> and 12 Jan 1716/17 (inventory). ^[8] Married Sarah Foster.

7 Priscilla Bartlett b in Jan 1696/7, ^[9]<MD 9:231> ; d 7 July 1758. ^[10] Married John Samson. ^[7]

8 Deborah Bartlett b ( ); d after 25 Oct 1750 (deed). Married Josiah Thomas. ^[11]

9 Abigail Bartlett b about 1702; d 30 October 1776, ae 73 y, 3 m, 26 d, Duxbury g.s. <MD 9:160>. Married Gamaliel Bradford. ^[11]
