John Bartlett may have been born about 1766 in Virginia, but this has not been confirmed with primary sources. Based on early census records, the date of 1766 seems likely.[1] In his will he names Sally as his wife, whose maiden name is believed to be "Gore". He died in 1835 in Franklin County, Kentucky.[2]
Research Notes
Hypothesis: John Bartlett's parents were Thomas Bartlett and Mary Foster.
Evidence to Support Hypothesis:
Deed record in Spotsylvania County, Virginia in which a John Bartlett served as witness for a Thomas Bartlett. Thomas and Mary may have been from Spotsylvania County.[3]
John named one of his sons Thomas and another Anthony (confirmed son of Thomas and Mary)[2]
Evidence to Contradict Hypothesis:
Thomas Bartlett's will in Spotsylvania County does not name John Bartlett.[4]
There is no evidence of John Bartlett living near Thomas Bartlett in Henry County, Kentucky, only shown living in Scott and Franklin Counties.[5][6][7]
Conclusion: Further research is needed to determine if John Bartlett's parents are Thomas and Mary.
