Biography

Andrew Jonathan Barton was born in 1861. He left Alabama, moving to Indian Territory when his children were very young. At that time, there were few white people living in the area. He'd travel to Fort Smith, Arkansas by wagon to pick up supplies so became quite a sharp shooter to keep those supplies from the outlaws who crossed into Indian Territory to escape justice.

He opened a store and started selling the goods he had purchased in Arkansas. He was a shrewd businessman and hard worker so steadily prospered.

Indian Territory soon became the state of Oklahoma and people poured into the area. In time, he owned three lumber mills, dry goods stores, rental houses, and a lot of land around Fanshawe, Oklahoma.

He and his sons built the first church building. Because his wife was a Methodist, they put a Methodist sign on the building. No one but his family came to worship so they took the sign down and put Freewill Baptist up, then others attended services with them.

He passed away in 1914 leaving a good income for his wife to live on. He's buried at Fanshawe Cemetery, Fanshawe, Le Flore County, Oklahoma.
