Biography

An early record from Charles City County, Virginia, shows that John Lanier and Lucrece Lanier were among a group of 47 people transported to Virginia by Howell Pryce.[1] The record is undated, but it is among others from the spring of 1659, and is presumably from that time period as well. (Some authors have stated that the record is from April 1657. [2] [3]) These patents sometimes took several years to be recorded, so all that can be said is that John and Lucrece were in Virginia by early 1659, and possibly earlier.

It has been suggested that John Lanier and Lucrece Lanier were husband and wife, that Lucrece's maiden name was Bassano, and that they married in England before coming to America, but no record of their marriage has been found. [4]

Another theory is that the Lucrece Lanier who arrived in Virginia was the sister of John Lanier rather than his wife.

It should be noted that there is documentary evidence that Lucretia Lanier sister of John Lanier did exist, but no direct evidence that a Lucretia Lanier wife of John ever existed.

She is not to be confused with the Lucretia Bassano grandmother of John Lanier, who did exist.

Lucretia, daughter of Anthony Bassano and his wife Eleno, cannot be both the wife of John Lanier and his grandmother. I have removed the link between this Lucretia and her 'father' Bassano-68 and his wife. This should allow the two Anthony Bassanos and the two Elenos to be merged.

As to the claim by Ingersoll that John Lanier had a wife called Lucretia - refer to the G2G post https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/1088015/are-john-lanier-lanier-and-his-john-lanier-lanier-same-person?show=1088015#q1088015

The Lucretia Bassano who was the daughter of Anthony Bassano and Elena de Nazzi was John's grandmother, and lived from 1553 to 1634. If you google // "Lucreece Bassano" Lanier // that is all you'll come up with. That history is very well known. Now the longstanding Brewer and Lanier genealogies do have this John's wife as "Lucreece", no last name, no other info. That might even be a mistake, but they definitely never said Bassano, and she couldn't be the daughter of those particular Bassanos.
