Biography

William was born on 25 December 1618 in England.[1] He is the son of Nathaniel Basse and Mary Jourdan.[2]

It is unclear when William arrived in Virginia. His father Nathaniel Basse traveled several times between England and the Virginia Colony during the years 1619 and 1622. At the census of the Living in Virginia ebruary the 16 1623 Cap. Nathaniel Basse and Samuel Basse are listed at "Basses's Choice." No other persons named Basse are at that location. William Basse and Mrs. Basse are located at Jordans Jorney on this census. It is possible but unlikely that they are this William, who would have been about 5 years old, and perhaps his mother.[3]

By 1641 William had settled at "Basse's Choice" plantation on the east side of the Pagan River, Isle of Wight County, Virginia. A plantation on the west side of the Warrosquoyacke (now Pagan) River was established by William's father Nathaniel Basse, Arthur Swaine, and others who applied to The Virginia Company for a patent for the property on 21 November 1621 which was granted on 30 January 1622.[4] In November 1621 Nathaniel Basse received a patent in his name for a 300-acre tract of land a short distance west of Warrosquyoake on the east side of the Pagan River. It became known as Basse's Choice.

"William Basse sonne of Nath and Mary Basse was married to Sarah Batten ye 25th day of September in ye year of our Lord 1641 A.D."[5]

They had children:

  1. Edward Bass, 1643
  2. Joseph Basse, 1646
  3. William Basse, 1646/47
  4. Thomas Basse, 1650
  5. Keziah Basse, 1654

Research Notes

Death Date

I have been unable to locate any documentation for William's death date. I am suspicious of the given date because it is the same year that his son William Bass died in Henrico County, Virginia. I am also uncertain about the location of his death in Norfolk County. There is no documentation that he ever lived in Norfolk County. His father's plantation, where he settled, was in Isle of Wight County. Shirley Dalton 17:43, 16 September 2019 (UTC)
