Sarah was born about 1818, probably in Monroe County, NY. She is probably the daughter of Martha Cox but that is uncertain. Sometime after her birth, her father and stepmother (Nancy Weeks) moved to Ohio. She married Eli Hale in 1846 in Erie, OH. By 1850, she and Eli were living in Green, St Joseph, Indiana, USA with their two children: Eli Darwin (aged 3) and Thomas (4.5 months). Both Sarah and Eli give their birthplaces as New York. By 1860, they were in Ludlow, Allamakee, Iowa and had added Schiller (Schuyler) to their family, but Thomas is no longer listed. In 1870 Sarah is living with Schuyler, aged 19 in Allamakee, Iowa.
