Biography

I was adopted by the late Heinz West at the age of 7 hence my surname changed from Basso to West. I was born in Duisburg, Germany but currently live in Singapore where I'm the Co-Founder and CEO of Numero Pte Ltd, working on the next generation of DNA Genealogy software, see Your DNA family.

I have actually forgotten when I started with genealogy but it's been more than 25 years ago for sure. Researching the life and circumstances under which my ancestors lived has not only told me much about history but keeps the memories about my ancestors alive and hopefully helps other researchers.

DNA

Y-DNA

I did Whole Genome Sequencing and as of now my Y-Haplogroup is: E-A9723 (also named E-BY3880) with terminal SNPs: Y-Haplogroup: E-A9723 (also named E-BY3880) with terminal SNPs: A9723 • BY6203 • BY6204 • BY6349 • BY6425 • Y47298 • FT214467 • FT215071 • Y174213 • FT214169 • Y282257 • Y263952 • BY19390

It was formed 4000 ybp and the TRMCA is now 2430 ybp.

This goes back to Asiago in Italy where his oldest male ancestors have moved along the Balkan all the way up to Italy (not verified but most likely used that route).

Path from H: H -> H4 -> H4a -> H4a1 -> H4a1a -> H4a1a1 -> H4a1a1a

Haplogroup H, the parent of H4, originated in the Near East and expanded throughout Europe after the peak of the Ice Age. H4 branched off approximately 12,000 years ago in the Black Sea region and then expanded into Eastern Europe, eventually making its way as far west as the British Isles.

The H4a1a1a* subclade is determined by the mutation of A73G! which is normally A (ancestral) and has mutated to G.

Your DNA family app

I'm also the author of the "Your DNA family" [see here https://www.yourDNA.family] which:

Automatically identify DNA cousins, get more and better results out of your DNA test. Solve family mysteries and overcome brick walls when paper trails end Concentrating on helping orphans, adoptees and interested genealogists in: - discovering previously unknown family members - overcoming roadblocks in their genealogy - verifying the paper trail research to their ancestors many generations back into the past - getting the most out of autosomal DNA tests including identifying which of their matches are 'identical by descent' - organising their many new DNA cousins into secure, closed groups so that they work collaboratively on identifying their common ancestor and combine their family trees

For more information about it's features and to see the app in action please check out this [video https://youtu.be/rdnb8y-y3XA]

Work in progress

While he continues to bring over all of his researched ancestors over here (despite having little spare time), the full information about all related and non-related people he researched can be looked up here in the meantime (this includes a large list of mostly German surnames).

Andreas's current to-do list

Here are the profiles Andreas West is currently working on, mostly cleaning up the Gedcom left over and connecting them, putting the sources into proper footnotes. Can you help?

Digital Afterlife

March 25, 2015

In the event of my untimely demise I want to be sure that none of my hard work on WikiTree ends up having to be deleted. While I fully intend to be around to manage all my profiles for the next 18752 days, in the event of my sudden death I hereby give permission for all of my private profiles to be transferred to any of my extended family members (including my former spouses and their family).

Only the Trusted List can access the following:
  • Andreas's formal name
  • e-mail address
  • exact birthdate
  • birth location
  • images (2)
  • private siblings' names
  • spouse's name and marriage information
For access to Andreas West's full information you must be on Andreas's Trusted List. Please login.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships by comparing test results with Andreas or other carriers of his ancestors' Y-chromosome or mitochondrial DNA. Y-chromosome DNA test-takers in his direct paternal line on WikiTree:
  • Andreas (Basso) West: Family Tree DNA Y-DNA Test 67 markers, haplogroup E-L117, FTDNA kit #349062 + Y-Chromosome Test 50839 markers, haplogroup E-A9723
Mitochondrial DNA test-takers in the direct maternal line:
  • Andreas (Basso) West: Mitochondrial DNA Test Full Sequence, haplogroup H4a1a1a*
It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Andreas:

Have you taken a DNA test? If so, login to add it. If not, see our friends at Ancestry DNA.

Dear Germany Project member,

it's annual check-in time 2023. If you still wish to remain a member of the Germany Project, please reply to this post, by stating this intention. If we don’t hear from you in the next 30 days, your membership badge will be removed. In this case please don't be offended ... you're welcome to rejoin at any time. Please also note, that in order to receive help, with researching your German ancestors, membership is not mandatory. Just ask your questions in the G2G forum and tag them with Germany in order for knowledgeable people to see them.

If you wish to remain a member, we would like to learn more about your perception of the Germany Project in order to achieve a future development according to our members needs and wishes. For this, we created a survey, which we kindly ask you to fill-in.

In case you want to communicate, discuss and receive help about WikiTree in German, you might want to check out the WikiTree category at Compgen’s Discourse as well as the German Discord server Ahnenforschung.

Of course there’s still the official WikiTree Discord server, where we usually talk English. Feel free to learn more about Discord and the server at Help:Discord.

Kind regards from Black Forest

It's time for the One Place Studies Project Check-In!

We've put together a survey for you to fill out to check in with you, it will only take a moment as there are only a few questions. Filling out the survey lets us know you are still interested in coordinating your study and provides an opportunity for you to share any suggestions you may have for the project.

If you have decided to step away from your study, please reply to this comment to that effect.

Hello Willi,

sorry for my late response (overlooked your message). So we have a common ancestor in https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/R%C3%BCbsam-5

You can contact me directly via PM if you're interested in comparing our DNA to see if there's some DNA that triangulates between both of us and minimum one other person.

Hi,

My husband (Ernest Mark Walk) is a direct line descendent of Hans Martin Walke, an early German immigrant to Pennsylvania. He has done Ancestry DNA, but is not a member of Wikitree. If you are interested in working with his DNA I’ll try to persuade him to upload it to Gedmatch.

posted by [Living Smith]
Hello Wendy,

I'm in the process of developing a competitor app to GEDmatch which focuses only on Genealogy purposes (so no access for any other reason, eg law enforcement). Right now my app only allows the use of 23andMe data but if you follow my website https://yourDNA.family you will get notified when the upload of raw DNA data from Ancestry (or MyHeritage/FTDNA etc) is available too. I plan to eventually identify regional DNA data sequences for these Pennsylvania German settlers (and their counterparts in the rest of the world who also originate from the Palatine). Hope this helps

Hi!

This is Chris from the Italy Project. As part of the annual project check-in, can you fill in the project survey? This will let us know that you are still interested in the project and which teams you'd like to participate in.

Thanks and have a great day!

Greetings, my father is almost entirely Pennsylvania Dutch but as his family landed in southern York county Pennsylvania and adjacent northern Baltimore/Frederick County Maryland and stayed there for hundreds of years, I'm probably not related to you. On the bright side, I have a very full tree on that side. Gedmatch NB7224893

Ciao! This is just a general check-in for members of the Italy project. I am checking to see who is still interested in being a member of the project as we go through some much needed restructuring. I was also wondering what teams you would like to be on. We’ve created teams for each part of Italy. North, South, Islands etc. They will be explained further in an upcoming g2g post. Stay tuned. For now, please let me know if you are still interested in the project and if you’d like to be a member of a team.

Hi Chris,

my ancestors are from Asiago in the Province of Vicenza and I'm very active in researching them based on the civil registry in Vicenza that is available online. However, all my progress on my own direct ancestors is here on WikiTree already, due to the limited gene pool in that mountain village and the fact that the church books were destroyed during WWI I'm working mostly on the family trees of DNA matches to identify the common ancestor (which is very difficult due to the limited gene pool and no written sources before 1870 or so).

posted by Andreas (Basso) West
Oof. Sorry about the church records. =( I'll put you in the Northeast team as that's where Venice and that town are in. Good luck with everything!

Oh! And send me a message if you want to be a part of the Italy project Google Group and Discord server.

Andreas, I have early German settlers to Pennsylvania however I have not discovered when and who. I do know one surname is Cramer or it could have been Kramer.

Hi Marsha,

Thanks for your comment. I currently don’t have time to work on the German immigrants to PA project due to my main work at my DNA genealogy app.

I hope that I can add it in the future when I fits in.

Hi, please add the category to your page:

Category: Italy, Basso Name Study with the beginning and end

This is part of the project reorganization and will properly categorize the name study for Italy. Thank you!

posted by [Living Moore]
Sorry Sheryl, I don’t get what the category format should be like that you want me to add to this page.

Can you just paste it here and I’ll add it?

Thanks in advance

Andreas, please change your {{German Roots} template to {{German Roots Sticker} since your profile is not managed by the German Roots Project. (I have left off one of the braces on the preceeding templates, so that they will show up in this message).

To show your participation in the project, please add Category:German Roots Project to your profile.

Thank you for your comment to me. I was not issuing any sort of threat, but simply informing you. Sorry if I didn't communicate that well. Steven and I had a little bump in our communications due to an email problem/outage he had. I apologize for the second round of messages. Of course you are always welcome to work in German categories. I believe that Isabelle Rassinot has been trying to straighten out the Baden categories (perhaps they are the historical categories.) Thank you.

It's been a week since we first contacted you about the Categorization project. If I don't hear from you by August 14, I will assume that you don't wish to be part of the project any longer and will remove the badge. I thank you and look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Andreas,

I’m Steven, coordinator of the Categorization Project. Please have a look at the revamped Categorization Project page, specifically about the new team approach. Members will be now be part of the Maintenance Team. Project Liaisons and leaders will be involved in the Vision and Collaboration team.

Please contact me within the next week to let me know if you would like to remain an active member of the project. If I don’t hear back from you I will assume you no longer want to be a part of the Categorization Project.

Thanks, Steven

I have several Palentine ancestors on my maternal line. I have had DNA testing by My Heritage (recently) and Ancestry about 8 years ago. I am an active member of Ancestry.com and also My Heritage, where the results of my DNA tests are recorded. I don't understand how to compare results for genealogy. What info do you need from me?

I will send My Heritage kit number, if that will help. I have a printout, 44.5 pages/42-43 people (kit #, name, email, Haplogroup, Autosomal & X-DNA) of matches to my DNA. Danner, Tomer, Doner, Tener are some of the major names in my Maternal line.

Andreas, do you know anyone who would have time to transcribe a bit of Kurrentschrift into modern German J Palotay has been so helpful translating from Hungarian, and she has a request of her own. I would love to help her!

Can I do anything for you in return? I'm a WikiTree leader so I'm handy with categories and templates and such.
