Biography

Maria was born in 1793, the daughter of Elijah Batchelder and Sarah Marean. ^[1]

Frederick Clifton Pierce, comp., in his work Batchelder, Batcheller Genealogy: Descendants of Rev. Stephen Bachiller, of England, presents and describes Maria on page 182 as marrying David Hammond, residing in Burnham, Me., and her age at death being about 90; however, it was daughter Hannah who married David Hammond, not Maria(h), as documented in Waldo County Census Records (1850 (Town of Troy), 1860 (Town of Burnham), 1880 (Town of Burnham), and Hannah's death record (date of her death Dec. 5, 1883 at age 90 years & 11 mos., which identifies Hannah as "wife of David Hammond")]. One possibility for Pierce's conflation is that Hannah and Maria(h) could be one and the same person, Hannah being a nickname for birth name Maria(h). That said and being subject of further research, Hannah and Maria(h) are presented in other records as two different people with two different birth dates, notwithstanding Mary Pelham Hill's Publication: Georgetown Vital Records to 1892 Births, Vol. 1. Not only does Hill present Maria and Hannah as two different births and daughters of Elijah and Sarah (Morean) Batchelder, but also Hill's records represent concurrence with Hannah's Federal Census and death records as wife of David Hammond above afore-described. Nonetheless, the conflict between Pierce and Hill may necessitate further research work.
