Disputed Origins

Anderson in Great Migration names her Ann ____ As part of on-going collaboration on WikiTree, she is called "Ann Bate,"[1] She "was closely related in some way to Reverend John Bate, Bachiler's successor as vicar of Wherwell; she died sometime between about 1610 and 1624. (Although this first wife's given name is stated to be 'Anne' by many authorities, there is no record evidence to support this.)" It has often been reported that her maiden name is Bate(s) but her relationship to the Reverend Bate isn't known. Her maiden name may be something else.[2]

An article from 1991 by George Freeman Sanborn, Jr. mentions:

"Further evidence that his first wife and mother of all his children was probably a sister of Rev. John Bate, Bachiler' successor at Wherwell, Hampshire, was discovered by Charles Edward Banks in an English court record (Court of Requests, Public Record Office, London. REQ2/678/64, dated 2 November 15 Charles I [1639]), and preserved by Charles Hull Batchelder in his extensive manuscript collection on the family at the New Hampshire Historical Society in Concord."[3]

The name of Stephen Bachiler's first wife as "Ann Hester" is found in a number of FamilySearch "Pedigree Resource File" submissions it is also found in FamilySearch's "International Genealogical Index" (aka IGI, like Pedigree Resource Files, now also considered "User Submitted Genealogies").[4] No historical records or reasoning has been given on the profile that would explain a "Hester" association.

As with all genealogical work, findings such as these are subject to review and update, based on improved historical discovery and insight.

Biography

No record of her name, birth or parentage has been learned. Robert Charles Anderson reported six children born to her by her marriage to Rev. Stephen Bachiler. Anderson placed their births between "say 1590" (Nathaniel Bachiler) and "say 1610" (Theodate).[5]George Freeman Sanborn, Jr. (1991) , "Rev. Stephen Bachiler of Hampton: Some Additional Information,"

If she was not more than 40 at the time of the last estimated birth, then her own birth can be estimated as "say 1570."

Disputed birth: 1561 of Wherwell, Hampshire, England Disputed christening: 1571 Norwich, Norfolk, England

New article coming soon from George Sanborn. He knows her maiden name and the name of her father.

Bate-414 and Bate-138 appear to represent the same person because: They have the same name and are married to the same man.

I suspect "Ann Hester" is a mis-step. Perhaps a cross between the wife of the immigrant and wife of his son, Nathaniel m. "Hester Le Mercier?"

Inquired about this privately on 1 September 2014. Any suggestions from the crowd?

Am preparing updated G2G. Hoping to garner support among collaborators to sever "Ann Bate" (Bate-336) from purported parents.

This would allow unmerged matches to proceed.

Thank you for your patience.

Can you help?

I have not been able to learn the sources, reasoning and logic by which parents have been attributed to either/or "Ann Bate" (d. bef 1624) and the man said probably her brother, Rev. John Bate (d. 1633)

Given what we know to be her limited identity, how can we explain:

1. Why her brother is called John Bates (rather than John Bate).

2. How the birth locations for the two purported siblings could be known; how their birth dates might have been estimated.

3. Why/how the two siblings have been associated with parents, John Bate and Ann Bray.

4. Why Rev. Stephen’s wife would be reported to have also married a Bosworth and thus be the mother of a Joseph Bosworth.
