Thomas Leroy Bates was born on 2 Apr 1819 and was 97 when he died. He married first, on January 4, 1844, Cynthia McCarty (1824-1867), but she died young. He then married Emaline Culton (1842-??) on July 29, 1868.

Thomas died on 24 Aug 1916 and is buried in the Tasso United Methodist Cemetery, Bradley County, Tennessee, USA.
