Melvirda Bates was born 7 Dec 1829 in Franklin County, Alabama, daughter of Robert Patrick Bates (1790-1840) and Jane (Hill) Bates (1792-1853). [1]

Melvirda married Julius Nicholas McKinney in Arkansas Jul 17, 1849
- On their way from Arkansas to Texas Melvirda sat in the back of the wagon with her gun & powderhorn. Felix drove the wagon with his gun & powderhorn. Ox pulled wagon.
