Biography
George Bates was born in 1866 in Hobsons Bay, Victoria, Australia, son of George Bradley Bates (1828 - 1908) and Ann (Kennedy) Bates (1834 - 1916).[1]

Research Note
It appears that George may have stepped away from his parents & siblings as his marriage wasn't largely unannounced and his parents & siblings were not mentioned nor did they comment at the time of his death. A notice was published in The Age (Melbourne, Vic. : 1854 - 1954), Fri 12 Mar 1948, Page 2, Family Notices BATES. — On March 7 at St. Vincent's Hospital, after a long illness, George, loved father of Elsie, and loving grandfather of Jack, Frank, Vincent (deceased), Eileen and Nano (Sr. M. Augustine), aged 82 years, interred privately. (Again, no mention of parents or siblings.) It seems that he married a Kate Doyle ... Registry of BDM, Victoria. marriage certificate Record information Event: marriages Registration number: 5133 / 1888 Family name: BATES Given name(s): James George Personal detail Spouse's family name: DOYLE Spouse's given name(s): Kate (Note that he used a first name of James) They had one child; Elsie Bates.
