Biography

Alvis was born in 1833.[1] His parents are said to be Ransom Baucom and Sally Barnes.[2]

Alvis married Julian (JuliaAnn) Josephine Long on 7 February 1854.[3][4]

Alvis served as a Private and Confederate soldier in Co F. 48th NC Regiment. The regiment was captured near Petersburg, VA on March 25, 1865 at the Battle of Fort Steadman/Hare's Hill. He was confined at Point Lookout, MD on March 28, 1865 and released June 23, 1865 after taking the oath of allegiance. Company F of the 48th was also known as "The Waxhaws No. 2"[5]

Alvis and Lydia A Mullis were married 25 Mar 1863 in Union County, North Carolina.[6]

He passed away in 1912. Alvis and Lydia Adaline are buried in Zion United Methodist Church cemetery in Union County, NC.[1]

Research Notes

Alex A Baucom's 125 acres was placed for sale in 1915. He and Lydia had both died in 1912. What prompted the sale at this time:[7]
  • Speculation: His daughter Mary Ellen (Baucom) Little died in 1914. Did the probating of her estate cause a need to split the land to which she would have been an heir?

Following are research notes I have gathered while trying to determine whether Alvis was married 2 or 3 times. Most information I have seen indicates only two marriages and relegate the "Margaret J" reference on the 1860 Census to an enumerator's error. However, someone on FamilySearch has linked the 1860 Census record to a Margaret J Helms. This timeline contains all records found to date which list or omit references to the wives of Alvis Baucom as well as any references I have found to Margaret Helms living in Union County, North Carolina, during the appropriate time period. This research is ongoing but, at this time, I have chosen to only include the two wives for which I have proof. McGee-1611 07:46, 4 March 2016 (EST)
