Biography

John, son of John and Hannah (birth surname unknown), and a grandson of Thomas, was born in Weymouth ca 1650. He was made Freeman in the Massachusetts Colony (as of Weymouth) on May 23, 1677.[1]

He went to Scituate as a young man before 1670 to take charge of the farm of Capt. John Williams at the Neck. He [John Williams] died in Scituate, June 22, 1694, leaving no issue. The will of Captain Williams is dated at Scituate, 1691. "To my ancient servant (tenant), John Bailey," he gave the farm on which he lived at the Neck in Scituate.[2]

John married first, Sarah, daughter of Gowen and Elizabeth (Ward) White, January 25, 1672 at Scituate.[3] She was the mother of all eight of his children.[4][5]

He married second, Ruth Clothier, December 9, 1699.[6]

John Bailey died in Scituate, and in his will written on April 7, 1718, gave to his sons, John, Joseph, Benjamin, Will, and Samuel, 4 pounds sterling, each, in addition to what they had already received. To his daughter, Mary Perry, he gave 60 pounds sterling. He named his son William, executor.[7][4] His inventory heading records his death as 24 July 1718 and was taken on 26 August 1718. [8]

Something is very wrong here with these John Baileys. John, Jr. cannot have been born in 1650 if his father (in WikiTree ) was born about 1640. I see his father as being born in 1625 in Weymouth on some other sites which seems highly unlikely. I spent some time looking at the sources and could not find a solid date of birth for John the son of Thomas. In the Book of Bailey Genealogy on Archive.org, I see a son John born to John in 1673. Bottom line: these profiles need examination of source materials, but from an initial look, it appears that records were lost or not kept in Weymouth and much of the history of this branch of the Bailey/Bayley family is unclear/unknown.

Bailey-3981 and Bayley-694 appear to represent the same person because: These appear to be the same person. I am not sure of the best spelling of the LNAB. I hope that the profile managers can come to an agreement on the best spelling to use
