Rachel Alzira Bean was born Dec. 29, 1826 in the Cherokee Nation (East), the daughter of John Shepard Bean (Aug. 31, 1799-June 28, 1857), a white man, and Ruth Starr (Dec. 25, 1799-May 1, 1895),a Cherokee and great-granddaughter of Nancy Ward. Rachel is listed on the 1851 "Old Settler" Roll living in the Flint District near her mother and siblings. [1] She married Josiah Matthis on May 10, 1857 (no children), and had two children, Nancy Goss and Charles Bean with Benjamin Franklin Goss, her sister Sarah's husband. [2] Rachel appears on the 1880 and 1890 Cherokee censuses and the 1896 "Old Settler" payroll as Rachel Bean, living in Flint District. Her daughter Nancy completed her Dawes application for her, stating that her mother was elderly and infirm. [3] Rachel died March 25, 1906. [4] She is buried at the Stilwell City Cemetery, Adair County, Oklahoma. [5]
