Biography

Isaiah Chessman Bean was born at Jay, Maine in 1833, the son of Israel Bean and Elizabeth Paine.

The 1850 US census for Jay, Maine lists residents Betsey Bean (64), born in Massachusetts, Nathaniel Bean (72), born in New Hampshire, Benjamin Bean (22) and Chesman [sic] Bean (19). The sons were born in Maine. All the males are farmers and Betsey owns real estate valued at $1000. Her son Dudley Bean (35) and his family live next door. Note: Nathaniel Bean is Betsey's brother-in-law; her husband died 25 Apr 1850. The census record was compiled 1 Aug 1850.

Isaiah married Irena Conant at Jay on 20 Aug 1852. They were the parents of seven known children. Irena died a week after giving birth in 1865 to their youngest child, Irena C Bean.

The 1860 US census for Jay, Maine conducted on 13 Jun 1860 lists residents Isaiah C Bean (29), a farmer, his wife Irena (25), their children Eva W (7), Frank W (5), both attending school, Hebert (3), Martha A (2) and Susan 8/12. Isaiah's mother Betsey Bean (74), widow, born in Massachusetts, and George W Foster (26), born in Maine and a farm laborer make up the rest of the household. Isaiah owns real estate valued at $1500 and a personal estate of $572 while Betsey owns $100.

The 1870 US census for Jay, Maine lists residents Isaiah C Bean (38), a farmer, Eva W (17), keeping house, Frank E (15), Herbert (13), Martha (11), Susan R (9), Jesse K (7), Irena (5), Betsey Bean (86), born in Massachusetts and Emerson Bean (48). Betsey and Emerson are without occupation, and all the occupants except Betsey were born in Maine. All the children except for Eva attend school. Isaiah has real estate valued at $1400 and a personal estate of $1410.

The 1880 US census for East Livermore, Maine lists residents Emmerson [sic] Bean (56) who keeps hotel, his brother Isiah [sic] C Bean (48), who works on a farm, nephew Jesse (18), a hostler, niece Eva W Bean (27), a single dressmaker, boarder George Brown, who works on a farm, housekeeper Dora Stearns (25), servant Flora Oldham (19), who does housework, nephew Frank Bean (25), a hostler, and boarder Sewal Atword [sic] (35) who manufactures pulp.

Marriage records/vital records for his some of his children state that he was a hotel proprietor, so it can be assumed that after his brother Emerson died in 1881, Isaiah continued operating the hotel where he and some of his children resided in 1880.

He passed away in 1896 and is buried at the Jay Hill Cemetery, Jay, Maine.
