Biography

Prince George Maximilianovich Romanovsky, 6th Duke of Leuchtenberg, was born on 29 February 1852 (17 February 1852 according to the Julian calendar then in use in Russia) in St Petersburg. He was the seventh child and fourth son of Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna of Russia and Duke Maximilian of Leuchtenberg[1][2]. He succeeded his brother, Eugen Maximilianovich, as Duke of Leuchtenberg after his death in 1901.

Prince George Maximilianovich married duchess Theresia Petrovna of Oldenburg on 12 May 1879 in Stuttgart. They had one son, Alexander Georgievich, 7th Duke of Leuchtenberg, born [3]. Theresia died in 1883.

Prince George married, secondly, Princess Anastasia of Montenegro, daughter of King Nikola I of Montenegro, on 16 April 1889 in St Petersburg. The couple had two children:

  1. Sergei Georgievich, 8th and final Duke of Leuchtenberg, born 16 July 1890, unmarried, no issue;
  2. Elena Georgievna, born 27 January 1892, married to Count Stefan Eugeniusz Tyszkiewicz[4].

Duke George's second marriage was unhappy and he spent much of his time in France, leaving his wife in Russia. The marriage ended in divorce on 28 November 1906 (new style) in St Petersburg[3].

The duke continued to live mostly in France. On 3 May 1912, Prince George Romanowsky, duke of Leuchtenberg, widower of Theresia of Oldenburg, divorcee of Anastasia of Montenegro, died at 19, rue du Général-Appert in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. He was 60 years old[1].
