Obituary

NAOMI KATHERINE (BECKER) HATHAWAY, 99, a Palm Springs resident for 68 years, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2013, in Palm Springs, Calif. Naomi was born Sept. 29, 1913 in New Haven, Ind. a daughter of Arthur and Edith (Behrman) Becker.

Her generation witnessed many wars, including World War II, where Naomi lost her brother, Elmer, a decorated war hero, at the Battle of the Bulge. She grew up on the large Becker farm in New Haven, where she attended Emmanuel Lutheran School, New Haven High School, and the Luther Institute, Fort Wayne. She began working in high school, first for the New Haven Hosiery Mill, later for General Hosiery, and General Telephone in Fort Wayne.

In 1945, she and a family friend, Rose (Gautiello) Poist headed west, where she met (and later married) Fred Hathaway. She worked with Fred for many years, assisting him in his growing lath and plaster business, Fred Hathaway Company. Later, Fred Hathaway & Sons. She was a Founding Member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and a tireless worker there through the years. After retirement, she served at Desert Regional Medical Center, Palm Springs, Calif., putting in well over 6000 volunteer hours.

She is survived by two sisters, Wilma (Becker) Martin of Fort Wayne and Elna (Becker) Szink of New Haven, three sons, seven grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Hathaway; and four siblings, Hilda (Becker) Gabet, Elmer Becker, Carl Becker, and Ervin Becker.

A Memorial service is 12:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at Our Savior's Community Church, Palm Springs, Calif. Arrangements by Forest Lawn with private interment at Desert Memorial Park, Cathedral City, Calif.[1]
