John George Baker was born Johann Georg Becker in Niederklein, Marburg-Biedenkopf, Hessen, Germany. He had nine siblings, and worked as a stone mason as did three of his brothers.

Johann George Becker he married Amalia Elizabeth Koch in January, 1840 in Neiderklein. His wife died in April 1854 roughly a year after their daughter Barbara was born.

Roughly six months after his wife passed away , Johann Becker immigrated to America with his young children. They left from the Germany port of Bremen and arrived in New York on Dec.13. This fits the general time frame of a 45 +/- day ocean trip, which was common for passenger ships.

According to Ship records the Becker family arrived in New York on Dec.13 on the ship named "Richard Cohden". He is found on the the ship's passenger list under the name Johann Becker. He is 41 years old and traveled with six children: Elisabeth 13, Margaretha 9, Maria Elisabeth 7, Ludwig 6, Johann-George 4, and Barbara 1.

Seven months after he settled with his children in Cumberland, Maryland, George married Christina A. Hauser.

When he passed away in 1889 his obituary stated the he had fourteen children (eight with 2nd wife Christina).

Research Note

The villiage of Niederklein was (is) stable/unmoving for centuries, but the world immediately around it was constantly changing during the lifetimes of this specific Becker Family. Niederklein was absorbed by three different fudal states or countries from 1800-1835. Johann and his wife Elizabeth were born in Niederklien, Prussia. Six of their children were born in Niederklein, Westphalia, Confederation of the Rhine. Four of their children were born in the time of Niederklien, Hesse, German Confederation. I have chosen to present this information in this reseach note, in the familiy's ten profiles.
