Biography

Chrispi was born in 1822. He was the son of Obediah Belcher and Martha Prince.

He married Sarah Rebecca Holstein in Virginia. Their children:

  1. Sarah J. Belcher, (1847–Deceased)
  2. Henderson French Belcher, (1848–1925)
  3. James Camel Belcher, (1850–1930), m. Sarah Adams
  4. Charles Mitchell Belcher, (1852–1920), m. Ada Maupin
  5. Martha Ellen Belcher, (1854–1943), m. Robert Baugh
  6. Mary E. Belcher, (1857–1868), died at age 11
  7. July Belcher, (1860–Deceased)
  8. George Belcher, (1866–1866)
  9. Virginia Belcher, (1867–1938), m. Riley Dillion
  10. Cora Belle Belcher, (1870–1948), m. Felix Dillion
  11. Amstero Belcher, (1873–1873)

The 1850 Census[1] shows him as 28 years old, living with his wife and 2 children in his parents household, (Obediah and Martha) in Mercer County, Virginia. His name is recorded as "Chrispi A. Belcher"

The birth register for Mercer, Virginia in 1855 records the birth of his daughter, Martha E. and records his first name as "Chrispyanos."[2] And he is the "person giving information of birth" for this record!

The family moved to Missouri sometime between Martha's birth in 1855 and 1859, when July was born in Missouri.

The 1870 Census[3] shows him at age 49 with his wife and seven children in Prairie Township, Montgomery County, Missouri.

The 1880 Census

He passed away in 1913, and is buried at the Dillion Cemetery near Middletown, Missouri.

Research Notes

Regarding his name:
The death certificate of his son Charles Mitchell Belcher records his name as "Aners Belcher"[4]

The digital record of the death certificate for "Chrispi"[5] records his first name as "Agners" but looking at the visual of the original, it appears to be "Aners." The last name is clearly Belcher, and the birth date and place, the death date and place, and his fathers name are all correct, so this is the correct person. However, one other detail on the death certificate is incorrect: His mother's maiden name, "Rebecca Holseng," which is remarkably close to his wife's maiden name, Sarah Rebecca Holstine. The informant is ?.?. Belcher likely one of their children. It would not be unreasonable to presume they inadvertently gave their mother's (his wife's) maiden name instead of the name of the mother of the deceased.
