Research Notes

  • Joseph Bellenfant was born 14 Nov 1790 in Halifax County, Virginia, according to Bellenfant Family Bible. His tombstone at Ballanfant Cemetery shows his birth date as 14 Nov 1795. At a young age, his family moved to Rockingham County, North Carolina, where he grew up.
  • He served in the War of 1812 for six months, beginning 28 Nov 1814. Sometime after the War, he moved to Williamson County, Tennessee. During his time in Williamson County, he married Sarah "Sally" Turner. The family Bible records the following: "Joseph Bellenfant eldest son of John Bellenfant, a native of France and Sally Turner, fifth daughter of James Turner, were married by Rev'd Garner McConnico in Williamson County, Tennessee on the 22nd day of April A D 1819".
  • He emigrated in 1824 to the Culleoka area of Maury County, Tennessee, where he remained until his death.
  • Joseph was a trustee of the first school at Culleoka in 1835.
  • Pleasant Grove (Culleoka) Post Office was opened at the Bellenfant estate in about 1835 and remained there for ten years.
  • Family history and sources show that Joseph and Sally only had one son, John, but the 1830 Maury County Census shows a young girl under 5 years of age in the Joseph Bellenfant household. If she was a daughter, she might have died young.
